"Terrible twos" or holiday backlash?

DD has always gone to bed happy.  She actually shooed us out of the room wanting to be alone to chat to her toys.  We had company coming and going for 5 weeks and now it's back to just us and the last 3 nights and naps she FLIPS out.  Banging on the door, sobbing...  Yesterday she was finally quiet.  I went up to get her after a couple hours of quiet (to avoid messing up bedtime) and she was sleeping in the big bucket we keep her toys in against the door!!

I want to institute a strict bedtime routine, but DH does her bedtime b/c I'm with the twins and he refuses, saying it's normal, so not help-able... I'm at a loss and DH leaves the country on Monday for 2 weeks- I am terrified of bedtime for 3 by myself!  Thoughts?

Re: "Terrible twos" or holiday backlash?

  • So, wait, I don't get it.  Did she scream and cry and then get quiet, then you found her asleep by the toys, or did she fall asleep early in the evening because she was tired from no nap?   What happened right before the falling asleep on the toys?

A bedtime routine never hurts anything.  It's almost always a win-win situation.

What do you think is making her cry and flip out?  Fear of the dark? Fear or being alone?  Or is she just out of sorts because of the holiday excitement?  What's your sense of the issue for her?

Sorry!   She screamed and cried for about 15 minutes then fell asleep (I assume).  I found her when I went to get her up from nap (ah- that's what I missed).  Not sure why... she is perfectly able to tell me when she is scared and of what, so not sure.  Could be the dark.  It started on a particularly windy night- maybe that started it.  But she goes up willingly, and snuggles happily and chats before I leave.  We've joked since moving in that the house was haunted- we here tinkling through the monitor when it's off, cats sppok out of nowhere, various sounds- and went so far as to wonder if she senses it too, but my gut says it's behavioral.  DH brought her to our bed a few nights to spare our guests the screaming one night- that was nightmare or teething, I bet.  Maybe this is backlash of that?  I feel sad letting her cry- but sense it's behavioral and she's pretty quick about finding our weak bones (where she can get a yes from a no.)  I nwish someone could just see the answer and fix it- it's so hard from within!
