Working mommas- how do you do dinner?

DS has been eating more table foods recently so we'd like to eat dinner as a family.  DH and I both work FT and I get home around 7pm ;(  DH picks up DS and they get home around 6pm.  DH usually cooks dinner once I get home so we end up eating anywhere around 7:30-9pm.  It sucks because DS goes to sleep around 8-8:30pm so we either have to feed DS separately/earlier and give him purees instead of table food then put him to bed or wait until dinner is done and put him to bed closer 9pm.  I always feel so rushed when I get home.  What do you ladies do?

Re: Working mommas- how do you do dinner?

  • I get home at 5pm so I am able to make dinner and then feed us all at the same time.  Someone else posted once about saving the left overs from last nights dinner to fed their lo the next day.  That way they are still getting table food but you don't have to make them wait while you make the meal.

  • Our solution isn't very good.  We don't do dinner as a family most nights, but we introduce table foods from our meals the night before (ie we save a little for DD for her dinner the next day).  We make a point to all sit around the table and we will have a drink or snack while we are feeding her.  Then we usually end up eating dinner on our own after she goes to bed.

  • I get home from work at 3 so I'm no help BUT could you start using the crockpot more?  Or do a lot of the prep work the night before after DS goes to bed.  I do that quite often.  I'll get all the veggies chopped for a dish and put it in the fridge.  I like to spend as much time as possible with DS when I get home so I prepare ahead as much as I can.
  • I'm the same as you basically.  I get home with dd around 5:30-6pm and she goes to bed around 6:30-7pm so I basically just feed her a little food, bath or play, then bedtime bottle and night night.  I wish we could eat together but that only happens maybe 1-2 times a week when dh decides to cook and we eat right when I get home.

We do this some days too

  • Plan meals ahead of time, utilize your crock pot, and pick easy dinners during the week.

I try to have cooked shredded chicken available for Mo. ?At the beginning of the week I'll just crock a bunch, shred. ?You can also incorporate this into meals.

  • as others mentioned, i would recommend fedding table food as leftovers from the night befoer, or use a crockpot (love mine!).

That is smart. I need to become a better planner and use the crock pot more often!

  • I get home earlier so it's a bit easier for me but DD goes to bed at 7.  I do one of two things.  I either give her some reheated leftovers from the night before or a different table food option I have handy (think chopped ham, cooked peas, etc.).  That sadly means we don't always get to eat as a family but it works out that we can a lot of the time.  Depends on when I get home and what's for dinner.  I have found that doing crockpot meals or quifk cook meals often means we can more easily eat together.

  • DH and I both get home between 5:30 and 6 and DS goes to bed at 8 so it is a little easier for us.  We don't do table foods yet, but we do feed DS solids right before we eat.  DH used to get home at 7 and I got home around 6.  I would start dinner and have it ready at 7 so that we could eat right away and still get DS to bed at 8.  I normally try to make double, espcially on some of our favorite meals, and then we heat up again later in the week so it is a bit easier a couple of nights.  Could you make a couple larger meals on the weekends and then only have to cook two or three nights during the week?

  • DH works from home and gets off around 5 pm.  I usually get home around 5:45 after picking up DS.  Most nights DH will either cook or heat up leftovers (we do a lot of leftovers during the week) and have it ready for us to eat around 6pm with DS.  We're still doing mostly purees with him, but we still try to eat as a family.

  • Thanks ladies!  All 3 of us usually eat the leftovers for lunch the next day but maybe I can try saving a little extra.  The crock pot is going to become my best friend...now on to find recipes...

I like that idea... maybe make a lasagna on the weekend and finish it a couple days during the week.  You've got me thinking.

  • I get home at seven too... I make DD part of the dinner we're eating the day before (like the rolls, or the veggie) and then I just heat up the leftovers for DH and I with the rest of our dinner later at night. It works for us now because DD doesn't eat meat yet...
