Baby Showers

What would you do?

My DH's cousin recently had a shower and sent out invites to the whole family even though she knew most wouldn't be able to make it.  I will feel bad if I don't do the same thing even though I only see these people once a year at the family reunion.

What would you do?

Re: What would you do?

  • My family lives all over the country.  A couple of the had asked for invites so we sent them to the entire family.  We hadnt originally planned on sending them to everyone but thought some might be offended if some of them got one and others didnt.

  • it's kinda like wedding invites. People that you KNOW can't make it, but it's a nice gesture. PLUS they might send you something in the mail. So send to everyone, just to play nice.  that's my recomendation anyway.

  • If you don't really know these people then they shouldn't get invites...or they will think about you how they think about your DH's cousin.  Do you think  it's odd she sent to everyone in the family?  A shower is not like a wedding.
  • my mom was offended when a family member we rarely see and lives hours (like 12) away invited her to the baby shower.  It just came across as looking for a gift.

  • BTW, I definitely don't think that shower and wedding invites are on the same level, people will fly across a country for a wedding, not for a shower

    Ditto.

And I strongly ditto that showers are NOT the same as weddings.  That is my biggest issue these days!  People are overblowing the importance of showers (which are specifically GIFT GIVING events).  They just are not the same as a wedding.

  • I talked to DH about it and he thought it would be weird to invite all of his family to the shower.  He thought his cousin may have been looking for gifts.

    Thanks for the input.

  • The only person I invited from far away was my MIL.  My rule is that if they have to fly, they don't get invited. If they're sane, they won't be offended that they weren't invited to your shower.  Its a shower, not the party of the century.
