Children @ appointments

A post on 1st tri had me thinking about this. Do you bring your DC to pregnancy appointments? I brought mine to the first and it was a nightmare trying to keep him happy and quiet, especially with all the wait time. I was able to get someone to watch him for my 12 week NT scan.

Anyway, I was just curious what others do...thoughts?

Re: Children @ appointments

  • I have had to a few times. You do what you have to. They are in the business of babies. Most of the time I went when she was in school.

  • I schedule mine during the school day on my free period so DD is at dayare. I would rather not take her but I am sure I will have to at some point. Once I start going bi-weekly/weekly I can't leave school that often.
  • I try very hard not to bring DD. She is not into sitting in her stroller any more and it's just not fair to her.
  • I try to avoid it, but I am a SAHM, so daytime daycare is not always reasonable.
  • I didn't.  I purposely scheduled them for 1st thing in the morning so DH would just go in to work late.  Towards the end when I couldn't get am appts DH would just leave work early.

His boss actually encouraged him to take whatever time he needed - they know he more than makes up for it at other times

  • I try not to, and absolutely won't take him to actual OB appts. because of the wait- nurse visits where I'm in and out, I've had to take him a couple times.  We're rarely in the waiting room for more than 2 minutes.  It's not something I like to do, but I can't always find a daytime sitter.

My main reason for being hesitant has nothing to do with his behavior.  I had two miscarriages before having DS and it was really awful to sit in the OB waiting room and see little ones everywhere- that was harder than seeing pregnant women.  I just try to be cautious about that.  JMO.

  • I try not to.  At our first one she did ok, but the second on (12 weeks) she flipped out when she put the doppler on my belly.  We think she thought the dr was hurting me.  I've had two since then and have family come watch her then.

  • Like another poster, I try to always schedule my appointments for first thing in the morning on days when my husband is able to go into work late. I've had to bring DS to a few appointments, and each time was awful. He's just old enough where he recognizes a doctor's office, but not old enough to understand when I try to explain that we're there for me and not him. So basically he's hysterical the whole time and I'm stuck up on the table unable to console him. It sucks. Luckily DH has been able to watch him more times than not. I am starting to wonder though about all the well child visits DS #2 will need in the beginning... those will be fun with two little ones I'm sure. Tongue Tied

  • I don't but I can get my mom to babysit and she's close to my dr so it's not a big deal.

  • I dont mind him coming as long as it is not his nap time and DH is coming too, that was DH can pay attention to him.  If it is nap time I usually have MIL come over.

  • I did at the first appointment and it was a nightmare. Never again. It was fine when she was 6 weeks old, but as a 7 month old she was not having it.
  • I tried to make my appt for when DH was home or had my sister or mom watch DD1...Madelyn would have never lasted for an appt she is far too active...
  • i scheduled it when on wednesday afternoons so my Aunt could watch him since she gets off work on wednesday afternoon :)

  • the nurses always held my son for me :) or played with him. with the exception of u/s appts my husband took off an hour in the am to watch him
  • I bring DD with me to every appointment.  I just bring toys or snacks and she's generally pretty good so long as we don't have too much wait time.
  • I have to.  It is not always fun but I have no choice.  I dont have family close and DH cant get the time off of work.  I have toys set aside just for those appointments and lots of snacks, I let him eat stuff he normally wouldnt.  I sing and dance and the nurses must think I am nuts but it keeps him happy.  And when it comes time to doppler I have a song I sing where we can both show off our bellies and rub them at the same time.  He laughs hysterically.  Yup, I am a nut.  But they are in the business of babies!!
  • I bring him to almost all of them.  I have no choice.  My DH is out of town every week for work.  I ahve no family around.  He is good, I let him run around the waiting room then put him in the stroller when its our turn, and give him a juice box (he loves this since it is not watered down like the juice i give him) while they takem y blood pressure, weight all of htat, then in the Dr office I let him run around and tell him the Dr. is going to check mommies belly.  WHen the Dr comes in I strap him back in to the stroller and give him somehting else he love like his pacifyer or some food treat or his blanket and then he sits while the Dr checks me out.

not perfect, but it works.  I will NOT take him when they do internal exams.  I will have to figure something out!

  • All of us (DH, DS, DD, and myself) see the same family practice doctor. I frequently bring DD to OB check-ups with me. I strap her in the stroller, but sometimes the nurse will take her to run the halls. I try to schedule appts for first thing after the doctor's lunch so he isn't backed up with a wait. They are pretty good at staying on schedule unless you're appt is after like 4pm. I've also been lucky that I'm able to double book appt times when DD had her 12 and 15 month checkups to coincide with OB checks for me.

  • I took Matthias to almost everyone of my appts. I didn't have a lot of options. The only appt I didn't take him too was the one where I had to do the glucose screening (I almost passed out the first time I did one, so I was concerned about passing out and having DS with me). I usually just strapped him in the stroller and gave him snacks and toys to play with. The docs and nurses didn't mind.  I also tried to schedule them during his happy times.

This is what I usually do, I'm a SAHM and didn't have many other options. Toys and snacks, you make it work if you have to.
