Shower vs. Sprinkle...what's the difference?

This was brought up yesterday but didn't get a lot of repsonses and I've a little curious so I thought I'd post....

If you are having a sprinkle and registering and asking for big ticket items like strollers, swings and car seats what exactly is the difference between that and a shower?  I don't get it...I thought a sprinkle was suppose to be more of a diaper/wipes type party with no registry vs. a shower that is a bigger deal with a registry?

Re: Shower vs. Sprinkle...what's the difference?

  • Wow, I've never heard of a Sprinkle. Your definition sounds good to me!

  • Yeah, I always thought a sprinkle was for second-time moms, and just covered diapers and smaller items. I think if you're registering for big-ticket stuff, it's a shower.

  • Wtf is a "sprinkle" anyway?  I've always thought that's just what happens when it's raining lightly.  Or something that goes on a cupcake.  I'm missing something here...
  • I had no idea there was such a thing as a sprinkle. I'm not sure why anyone would even try to differentiate. Both are still parties with the main intent of gift-giving. Maybe people don't want to "seem" greedy so they have a sprinkle instead, but, does it really matter, everyone who comes to a shower/sprinkle, knows why they're coming.

Its the word that second+ time moms use to justify having a shower... because "it's not REALLY a shower..."

And then they go register for new furniture and strollers, lol.

  • I see no difference between the two.

    Ah gotcha!  Thanks :)

I think if I told my friends/family that I was having a "sprinkle" they'd laugh in my face, lol.  Definitely not a common term around here!

  • I agree, 2nd time (or more) mom with lower ticket items.  More about getting together to celebrate rather than loading up with large gifts.

Sorry hit enter before I started typing!  You make me laugh with every one of your responses...I hadn't ever heard of a sprinkle until I started bumping.  Smile

LOL!! - or something that happens when I sneeze!! haha!!

But really- I have heard that a shower- is a shower- but that a spinkle is just diapers and wipes...etc...(no registry)

  • Its the new way to be greedy! I think they're supposed to be small, like 10-15 people and small gifts are supposed to be given like diapers, wipes, etc.  I don't agree with the concept, but I don't think the mother should register if there is going to be one.

  • My main confusion is if you do a registry for both then what exactly is the difference, I think it's weird and it doesn't make sense to me!
  • Sprinkles are for 2nd or more children. Typically you DO NOT register for big ticket items like strollers/carseats/furniture etc as most people reuse those items. The truth is even though you're on #2 you still NEED big ticket items. We need a double stroller and to furnish a whole other bedroom! ( crib, 2 dressers, glider) Generally though the parents buy these items themselves, I know we are. But some people choose to register for those items. We have a "wish list" on BRU that we've been using for our own purposes but if people ask if I'm registered anywhere I refer them to the BRU wishlist. People still do want to buy you things for your 2nd or more. Its called a sprinkle because you're not "showering" the mother with gifts, you're jsut giving her the things that she needs for this baby VS. all the random crap you get at your 1st shower.

A Diaper shower is more relaxed, its usually a get together minus all the cheesy shower games/prizes/favors and your guests just bring diapering supplies ( diapers, wipes, cream, formula....some choose to buy clothing as well). I am having a diaper shower for this baby and guests have asked where I am registered, again I refer them to my BRU wishlist.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.  That makes sense..,

    ^ This

My sister had a "sprinkle" when she had her 2nd because she had a girl and the new baby was a boy.  She pretty much got all clothes and diapers, but my parents got her a double stroller.

  • I'm sorry but I think every baby should be celebrated! In our group of friends everyone has had a Sprinkle for their second and third baby. The 10 of us meet at a restaurant (each person pays for their own meal) and we bring a "disposable" item e.g. diapers, wipes, bottle liners, washcloths and bibs and sometimes clothing if the baby is different gender than their sibling.

We do not register or purchase large items, we do not play games and we dont' have formal invitations.

A sprinkle is simply a way to celebrate the new baby, and help out our friends with the costs of a new baby.

I'm sure when some of your first time moms have a sprinkle for your second you'll be more understanding and grateful for wonderful friends and family!

My sprinkle is this Sunday, I'm very excited!

This makes sense to me...were I was confused is why a person would register for a sprinkle...I always thought a sprinkler was smaller event than a shower.
