1st Trimester

Dr's answer to almost passing out

So for the past couple weeks I've had random moments when I almost passed out... actually getting to the point where my vision blacked out and I had to sit down for a long while. This happens a lot when taking a shower or blow drying my hair...?

Today I had my 12 week appt and my blood pressure was 100/62 and this was after my first caffeinated coffee in months. Doc explained that with pregnancy if you normally have high pressure it can get higher and if you normally have low blood pressure it can get lower. He said that mine probably gets down to the 80/50 range sometimes!! He said the way to fix this is the opposite of what people with high pressure do which means eating MORE salt.

I though that was fascinating and had to share...

Re: Dr's answer to almost passing out

  • Interesting.  I can't remember what mine has been.  It's always been normal, but I think on the low side.  I have had a few of these black out type incidents (before pregnancy and during).  I haven't really mentioned it to my doctor since I read it was relatively normal.  I lurve salt, so that's good to hear!  LOL.

  • i had that problem.  i have normally low BP and i passed out in the shower in my 1st tri and totally freaked my husband out.  it's pretty common.
  • Mine was always low, like so low I've been denied as a blood donor many times. Everyone kept telling me it was anemia and to eat more dark greens lol?

I'm just happy to have the green light to salt. I love fries ;)?

  • I had low bp probs too during the first half of preg....not fun.  Hope you are feeling better soon.  Don't forget to drink lots of water and put salt on your baked potato/f/f.  BTW, your puppy is sooo cute!
  • thanks for that! I actually did faint when i was pg with ds and dh was so scared since we were in the middle of no where in africa. oh was he scared! but i will try more salt and see if that helps.
  • I've had low blood pressure for as long as I can remember, and my doctor has always told me to eat more salt too :).  After taking my bp one time, she asked me if I was sure I wasn't dead, LOL!

At my last appointment, my bp was 90/60, which is right on the boarderline of Hypotension, but my doctor told me the opposite of yours, that pregnancy usually increased bp.  At least that was the case with DD#1...I actually became "normal"!

  • I also have low BP. I passed out a couple of months ago at work due to dehydration. The doctor that I had to go see for a follow up also said that it was okay to have a little more salt than you normally have.

  • I passed out a few times during my first pregnancy and it was due to low potassium. Weird, right? You never even think about your potassium intake.
