Trying to Get Pregnant

I just had my annual dr appt

And I told my doc all about TTC and how about charting, etc. And he shocked the hell out of me by telling me that we can do an SA and then an HSG as soon as I want to. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I, of course, will talk to DH about it, but maybe we will do an SA next cycle. He told me there is no need to wait a year. Did anyone else's doctor do this?

  • Wow ! Talk about fast!

  • I feel like doing those tests early is a plus.  Why waste time arbitrarily trying for a year if there is a diagnosable issue?  If everything is fine, then you'll know to just keep trying!

By the way, not sure if it's intentional, but that balloon in your ticker looks just like a Little Red Sperm.  :)

  • Well for the testing you really don't need to wait the year if ur Dr. is willing to do the test, but why not! I mean I would rather know if something is wrong sooner than later! And the HSG is just lab at cd21 it's no big deal. It's not like he suggested clomid..I can't remember, but how long hav eyou been TTC?

  • I'd take him up on the offer for the SA, but I'd hold the phone on the HSG for awhile longer.

How long would you wait on the HSG?

  • My doctor also said if I have been charting and know that I have been having pretty good timing that there is no reason to wait a year to do some initial testing.  My DH also has amazing insurance so we are lucky in that regard as well.

My cycles have been not so predictable (33days - 51 days) and have had a cyst on my ovary in the past and my hair is falling out so that is also why I am doing some testing.  If you don't feel like it's necessary right now wait it out a bit; but it is good to know that you have a doctor that will be proactive.

  • That's great! I'm on Cycle #3 & my doc said if we weren't pregnant after 6 months of trying to check in with her - we didn't need to wait a year. Might be because I'm 32 (closer to 35 than not) or maybe because DH works at the dr's office. Smile

Agreed.  If this cycle (#6) doesn't work for us, my DH will be getting an SA and I will be having CD 3 bloodwork, per my doctor.  They are easy, non-invasive tests to run.  HSG can definitely wait as far as I'm concerned.  I am about the same age as you also, elizjane.

Hey did you notice I kept it clean!!?

  • Personally, I would wait. But if you have the extra money and can afford OOP costs, GO FOR IT.

this is what we did. We did the SA maybe around the 6 or 7 month also, but I waited for the HSG until after the year mark, when I was referred to my RE. We took care of the bloodwork as well prior to the year mark.

Not saying your current doc isn't capable of doing the HSG, but it was comforting for me to have the RE do the HSG - because I know he's experienced in doing them.

A year. It's pretty invasive and painful and in most likelihood, unnecessary.

  • I can see doing an SA now, but an HSG as you know is more invasive...I would be weary about having one done at the 6 month point.  We are almost at 12 months TTC -- our new RE just suggested an HSG but I still feel its a little early for that...
