Two Under 2

did you give child 1 a gift when you had child 2?

My dd will be 19 months when I have baby number 2.  She knows there is a baby in my belly but I dont think she really gets it.  I have heard people talk about give a gift to baby number 1 but not sure how to do it or what to give.  I would love some advice on how to perpare my DD for her new brother.

 Thanks

Re: did you give child 1 a gift when you had child 2?

  • Yes, I did both times, but for the younger ones, they don't really get it.

I don't remember what we bought DD#1 when DD#2 was born, but for DD#1 and DD#2 we bought dolls and strollers when DS was born........

Honestly, there's no real preparing for a child so young. I didn't really start talking about a new baby until the month before I gave birth. And that was only to just put a thought in their head.

  • We're figuring a little something from the new baby to DD will help to smooth the transition.

  • DS was only 13 months and didn't get it, so no, we did not buy him anything.
  • We did (17 months apart) but they were not the sentimental type nor were they "from the baby" because that wouldn't have meant a thing to him.

They were something fun for him to do while he visited me in the hospital AND they were gifts that would occupy his time long enough for us to have a nice visit before he became board.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • DS was 16 months and we did not get him anything.

  • DS was 19 mos old when DD was born.  He visited us each day in the hospital and we did not do the gift there.  All was well, but we were most concerned with when we brought her home to "his" house.  So we had gotten him a Black and Decker Tool Bench that we had set up for him when we got home and told him was from DD.  Not sure if he really understood but he loved the tool bench and it totally distracted him from the new "attention hog" in the house.
  • We picked out a toy from TRU that we thought he would really like. Then we gave it to him in the hospital when he came to visit his brother for the first time. We told him it was from Nolan, but he didnt get it. But it was also just nice for him to have something to play with while he was visiting.
  • C got a baby doll in the hospital when she came to see Julia, C was 18.5 months old.
  • My DD #1 was 22 months and she got her first cabbage patch doll. I really don't think there's much you can do to prepare them.
  • Yes, we/baby gave him a cabbage patch doll.  He liked it but I think he would've been okay without it.

I had a scheduled c/s so we had new books at the hospital to read to him every day when he visited and I also had daily small gifts for him to open at my mom's house.

Honestly just talking to him often about the upcoming baby is what prepared him.  When he met DS2 we said "This is Asher" and there was never any question to him that this was the brother we talked about and he was going to live in our home too.  I asked DH to show DS1 how to kiss the baby while we were at the hospital and he has been kissing him all day long since then!

  • We picked out a toy for DS to get from his baby brother, but I also had DS help me pick out a couple of sleepers as a gift from him to the baby.
  • I was thinking about getting DS#1 something but waiting til I get closer to my due date.

  • We did of course he was 6 so he had alot more understanding of the situation...but we got him a toy he had been asking for and some movies and books so he had some distraction from the fact he wasn't getting all the attention...but I must say he has been an awesome big brother and has even been asking for another baby, but we aren't about to tell him we are trying!!
