How do you control unruly hair?

DS's hair is getting long, but we're not quite ready for a haircut yet. There's one spot on the very back of his head that gets matted when he sleeps. He's obviously tossing his hand back and forth or something so it becomes a matted little mess.

Anyone else have this? What do you do? Will a little conditioner help keep it down? Detangler? I imagine we'd need something you can leave in. I've tried a tiny bit of lotion but that doesn't seem to help much.

Re: How do you control unruly hair?

  • My son has thick, wavy hair that can get weird-looking after a night of sleep.  On my daughter's and my hair, I always use a comb or a very wide, plastic bristled detangler brush.

For my son's hair, I use a more old-fashioned bristle brush.  His is so short that the bristles don't snag and tangle, and only those real bristles are capable of taming his bed-head!!

  • One of my girls has very unruly hair - she actually has a genetic condition that makes part of her hair very kinky and curly.   You look at it wrong and it turns to knots.  I had started off using J&J detangler, but it wasn't really effective.  Now we use Bumble & Bumble Prep everyday to get a comb through it.  It's good because it's designed for fine hair, so it doesn't weigh it down.  Oh, I use a wide-tooth comb to comb it out.

  • It's not so much about detangling it, I can get a comb through it. It's just that the texture itself becomes very wiry. I think he needs something to keep it a little straightened out through the day.

I'll look for the Bumble & Bumble stuff though. Sounds good.

  • I always use conditioner in DDs curly hair.  When she wakes up its matted and yucky in the back so I either comb through with my fingers or spray some detangler and use a comb... that usually makes it Ok.
  • Ben has curly hair which becomes rather unruly and I don't want to cut it yet.  I re-wet it in the morning which helps tame the frizz and brings the curl back.  He had that same spot in the back that kept getting matted when he slept and I just cut it.  You can't even tell.

Oh, and I use a leave-in conditioner in his hair after his baths and I think that helps some.

  • DS had that spot in the back of his head for a while too, whenever his hair gets longer it comes back. Some mornings even re wetting it seems to do nothing but make it look like a wet birds nest. I've rubbed a little bit of my curl enhancing or moisturizing conditioner on the spot. I've found that moisturizing conditioners work better and that the detanglers make his hair more dry.
