Ughh, 2 yo not gaining weight :(

This has been a problem for so long. I *thought* he was eating better, but we took him in for a weight check this am and he is up only about 2oz. He weighs 22.06. He meets ALL developmental milestones, he's just not that into eating. I add in calories where I can and we have seen a nutritionist.

Just a vent. So tired of worrying about it. The pedi. printed off the charts for DH and rambled on about not letting him drink juice and fill-up with milk.

  • I hear ya. My 4 year old weighs only 29 lbs. Sad thing I was happy about that as I thought she lost weight. She gained 3 lbs and 3 inches in height in one year.  But year after year it's been 5th percentile or lower. She does fall off the curve but it's stressful. Finally I stopped worrying about it.

Did they make any other suggestions? like pediasure or something like that?

  • I have a child like this.  She was not quite 20 pounds at 24 months.  I have had good luck with smoothies for her.  Also, carnation instant breakfast.  Her 2-3 year old diet included 1 serving of carnation split over 3 , 5oz glasses of milk, two "regular" meals that did not include any dairy.  and one smoothie meal.  I put a veggie, a fruit, and about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.  You can also add more carnation.  I blend it with an ounce or two of soda because it has a strong flavor and a bit of sweetener and that is what I have on hand, but you could use milk or fruit juice to blend it.

I usually do about 1/3 can peas or carrots, 1 banana or 2/3 cup blueberries or 1 cup strawberries (frozen is fine, but thaw first), along with the peanut butter.  It is healthy and she will drink the whole thing very quickly, so I can get a lot more calories in her than I can if she sits down and eats one pea at a time and is bored after 2 minutes.

  • I have the same problem with my two year old. At his two year appt he wasn't even on the charts for weight. He has a horrible gag reflex and hates most food textures. He wouldn't even eat table food until he was about 14 or 15 months old. It's stressful, but I try not to worry about it too much.

I'm going to try the Smoothie. If he/she doesn't eat at a meal, like dinner, do you not offer anything else? Usually if he won't eat his dinner, I'll give him at least milk with Carnantion instant breakfast before bed. I just he figure he NEEDS the calories.

  • I am in the same boat and have been with DD since her 1 year check up she was no longer on the charts and at her 3rd year check up she is now on and in the 1% on chart she ways 25.3 pounds.  I also do carnation I use whole milk.  I also add cheese to alot of things also she now loves scrambled eggs with cheese, mac and cheese is a favorite item. I read somewhere about adding coconut milk to things that it has alot of calories in it.

We saw  a new pedi at the practice for her check up and we talked about her visit to childrens hospital of boston for her constipation and the tests they ran on her for that and weight.  After hearing about everything they did and or said he told me that some people are just small and that most likely DD is one of those people.  He also told me to stop stressing it and that most likely DD is feeling my stress and that is not going to help and that she will sense it and not eat.

Good Luck  and try  not to stress it
