2nd Trimester

Coffee...

How does everyone feel about drinking coffee while pregnant? I wondered if its a big deal, etc. I read a lot of info on caffeine during pregnancy it doesnt look all that bad but just wondered if anyone is drinking coffee or is it a huge no no?

Re: Coffee...

  • My OB told me no more than 200 mg of caffeine per day (equivalent of a cup of coffee).

I used to drink Dt. Pepsi but switch to caffeine free Diet Pepsi. It still gives me my soda kick, without any chance of harming LO.

  • I don't drink it daily (never did) but my dr told me it's safe to have a few cups/day so I have it when I want to.  I also drink caffeinated soda when I want to (again not a daily occurance).

  • Everything in moderation is what I say.  One cup is fine, the same with cola or tea in my books.
  • I would double check with your doc on what he thinks is best for you.  But I know a lot of pregnant gals that still have caffeine while pregnant.  Personally I am not having anything with caffeine in it, but that's just me!

  • I drink decaf when its available, but I have also had a few cups of regular. I personally don't think its a big deal but I stick to 1 cup per day (ok, occasionally two).

  • I have a cup of coffee (with lots of foamy milk) every morning. My OB never said anything to me about caffeine. As far as I can tell from the research, the major risks of too much caffeine consumption are miscarriage (1st trimester) and a low birthweight baby, but only over 200mg/day.

  • I have one cup in the mornings on weekends. I will have one pepsi almost every week day to keep away migraines. Dr says it's fine.

  • The first few days I knew I was pregnant, I tried to cut out coffee.  I had already quit smoking cold turkey the moment I took the pregnancy test.  I couldn't let go of the coffee.  I asked the dr and she said like the other posts within moderation.  So my rule is one cup of caffeine a day.  If I have a can of soda, then no coffee.  If I have my morning coffee, no caffeine drinks the rest of the day, just juice and water and decafe tea.  But that is only my personal opinion.

  • Doc told me not have more than 2 cups a day.  I did however, cut back and I probably only have a total of 4 cups a week.  I try to drink de-caf when possible and I have switched to regular coke vs. diet coke because of the aspartame.  The only real studies shown between pregnacny and caffeine is that more than 3 cups a day in 1st trimester can cause miscarriage.
  • I'm drinking coffee right now...

    I don't have it everyday...just days where I need a pick me up :)

  • I have a serious diet coke addiction so try to stick with the under 200 mg rule.  You should check out the lite coffee that has less caffeine but still some - not sure how many mg it has. Its a personal decision but good to get the facts.

  • I have a cup of coffee every morning. My OB told me that was fine. I need it to get through the day.

  • I have a single grande mocha/day.  When I was having morning sickness, and having trouble keeping water down, I only had 1 maybe 3 times a week if that.

Now that I am drinking more and staying hydrated, I see no issue with 1/day.  My OB is fine with this as well.

  • Drinking a nice steaming hot cup now....not everyday but a couple days a week, and especially on Fridays, I have some in the morning.
  • Yea i didnt drink any 1st trimester but i have one every morning now. Baby likes it LOL
  • Just go caffeine free. My OB said it's fine. I can't tell a difference.

  • My OB says I can have 2 cups a day and I have been having that pretty much every day. In the am I have a cup of half reg, half decaf and in the afternoon I might have another one of those or if I am at work I might have a sm latte which is only 75mg caffeine. I drank it with DD#1 too and she was fine.

  • I drink coffee every single day. I make a mix of the half and half coffee and decaf and then have 3 cups....so it equals out to about a half cup of regular. I have this every morning. I looooove the taste of coffee and there's no way I could not drink it for nine months. I make sure to get the naturally decaffeinated coffee (I like Caribou brand) so there's not a lot of nasty chemicals.

For a while there, I was getting into the habit of having another half cup of regular or a can of regular pop in the afternoon, but I stopped doing that - I started worrying that the baby would go through withdrawal from caffeine when it's born and get bad headaches. I know I got killer headaches when I cut back on caffeine when I found out I was pregnant, and I wouldn't want to subject LO to that! That is probably a ridiculous worry, but whatever - I asked my dr about it and she said there wasn't really anyway of telling if newborns have bad headaches, but she thought withdrawal would only come from someone with a really high caffeine consumption - over 200 mg a day.

  • I cannot function without caffeine because I am *not* a morning person and DD most certainly is, since she's 3 and she has energy from the moment she wakes up until bedtime. Also, if I don't have any by around 11AM the headaches start, and that's not good. 200mg a day or less is fine, so usually I will have either 2 cups of home brewed coffee or 1 medium coffee from a coffee shop. Technically there's caffeine in chocolate that I have been bad about counting into my total daily dose, so I might be a little bit over the limit on some days. And some days after work I need a little bit from a diet coke or something to push through, but very rarely have I had more than 2 caffeinated beverages in one day. I did this with DD and she turned out fine, I was actually more worried about the sweet and low I used to put in my coffee with her before I knew that was a no-no.
