Moms w/ LOs who;ve had surgery come in

C has surgery tomorrow (nothing serious, but still...) and I am freaking out.  the past 2 nights he's chugged 6oz at around 1am and another 6 at 6am!  He won't be able to eat after midnight (believe I've been trying to feed more during the day, he just won't take it).  on top of that, I am nervous for the surgery itself and pain afterwards :(

any tips or kind words are welcome!

  • Hang in there momma! DS needs to have surgery on the 21st for his circ. I'm freaking out too. My doc told us to wake him to feed him after he goes to bed and before he has to start fasting. Hope that helps.

    Good luck!

  • lwrig....Caden's surgery is the same!  I feel bad I dont even remember why we had to wait b/c there was so much going on in the hospital!

I am going to do the same...wake him probably 11:45, then we have to wake him I think at 4am to give him pedialyte.  ugg so stressful and I'll feel so bad for him :(  Did they tell you how long for healing?  I'll ask today when they call but wasn't sure if you knew?  I am hopeful it's not too long before he can get in the bathtub again b/c he loooves it

  • DS had open heart surgery at three weeks old and then had some testing done that required him not to eat....

Its real hard sometimes but just try to console him and distract him with play time ... or even sometimes try to get them to sleep / nap..

Like I said DS had open heart surgery and it was the hardest thing to see him go through but he was so resilent.  He never seemed to be in any kind of pain, never took any kinds of pain meds afterwards.

Just try to stay positive and lean on your DH and family...

  • thanks for the kind words wifey and gremaud!

gremaud, I hope your LO continues to be so resilient if he has to have any more testing!

  • What time is the surgery? This is what I have always done with DS and his surgeries. I wake him up just prior to the cut off for the last bottle of formula he can have, and then again for the last bottle of pedialyte. They usually let you continue clears until about 4-6 hours before surgery but it depends on the hospital/anesthesiologist/surgeon etc. So I did exactly what you said you are going to do and woke DS up at the last possible moment.

He still got really hungry and cranky while we were waiting in the pre-op room the first time, but he sort of wore himself out and fell asleep. GL and I know LO will do great! It is always scary no matter how "small" the surgery is...it's still your LO going under anesthesia and under the knife. T&P sent your way!!

  • they will call today w/ the surgery time.  they go by age though, so I'm guessing he'll be 1st (7am).  hopefully if he is 1st there will no delays and get him right in!!!
  • alison0399 - you have a pm!
  • My son had surgery at 2 months.  It was out patient.  I was way more of a wreck than him.  We gave him tylenol (per MD's orders) and he didn't seem to be in any pain.  What kind of surgery is he having?
