Toddler bed advice

So we switched him to a toddler bed a few weeks ago and he did great the first week or so but then the holidays hit and he went in his pack n play while we travelled.  Then when we got back we had to be in his room with him since we had company (we put a sheet up so he couldnt see us but that didnt last)  Anyways he starts off great every night...goes down and stays in bed and falls asleep but then he wakes up in the middle of the night and gets out and comes to the door and opens in and stands there calling for us (we have a gate up so he cant get out of his room).  When we go in he runs back in bed, I rub his back, sing a quick song then leave.  Then he gets up again.  This goes on now for a while.  Not sure what to do...whether to keep putting him back in or just let him cry by the door until he gets tired of it?  I am missing out on some valuable sleep before #2 comes!

    I am not there yet so I don't have experience but I would be inclined to let him cry or else he will just keep playing this game with you.

    We did the same thing with Matthias. He had a gate in his door and would go to the gate and call for us. We finally just let him cry and he didn't cry long at all. Often he still falls asleep in front of the gate, but we just pick him up and put him in his bed when we go to bed.
