Relocating to Austin--need opinions!

My husband, 2 year old daughter and I are relocating to Austin and we are stoked!  We are taking a 4 day trip next week to familiarize ourselves with the city as well as do a little house and school hunting.

My question is:  if you had to move to Austin all over again, what areas of town would you consider the 2nd time around that you didn't consider the first time?  Also, if you are very happy with your home/home builder/neighborhood/school or daycare, please take a minute or two to brag!  We'd love to hear all of the exciting things your community/school has to offer!  Thanks and we are looking forward to seeing your wonderful city soon!

  • Live as close to your jobs as you can afford! What area will you or your DH be working in? If it's in Round Rock, living in Kyle doesn't make much sense no matter how affordable the housing is there etc.

  • Yup, ditto Taytee. Start near work and circle out from there.

Be sure to touch base here- we have a really (REALLY) active board.

  • Yay!!  If you need help finding a place - let me know! I'm a realtor and can help you find a place to purchase or lease.  There are some wonderful areas in this great city.  Welcome!
  • Congrats on your big move!  You're going to LOVE the housing prices here.  My parents and sister are in SoCal (OC and LA) and as much as I'd love to move closer to them, the real estate prices out there just kill me!  Just be prepared for some very hot weather in the summer compared to CA!

Ditto the others- live near work.  We live in south Austin and I really love it here, but DH was transferred to north Austin after we bought this house and it's a PITA for him to get to/from work on the days he needs to be there around normal rush hours.

Austin is such a great city, you're going to love it!

  • There are lots of great neighborhoods both north, south and central - so depends on how far you want to drive vs. where you want to live.  If I were looking again, I'd focus more on the area from 2222 to 360, the Arboretum and that general area. I love the hills and trees.  We had to buy fast and couldn't find something we liked over there while we were looking.  But - really, there are tons of great places to consider.

Any requirements for daycares/preschools?  Full time?  Part time?  Montessori?  Price?

  • I would advice to rent for at least the first year.  We changed our minds about 4 times over what part of town we wanted to settle in.  If we had gone with our first choice, we would be hating life right now.
