Co sleepers- twins sleeping together or not?

So I had registered for the original arms reach co-sleeper and then I read that the babies shouldn't sleep together...to reduce SIDS.  We're also planning to use the angelcare monitors... I can't imagine paying $400 for two co sleepers (mini) when we paid 1/2 that for the cribs!

What did you ladies do for the fist couple months or what are you planning on doing?

Re: Co sleepers- twins sleeping together or not?

  • Im getting the twin pack n play for the first couple months.  Its cheaper on amazon than at BRU online.

  • I did look at that but they can only be in that till they're 25lbs...total...so confused!
  • I bedshare with the  twins.  I have always had them swaddled and side by side, perpendicular to me.  Now that they aren't swaddled they sleep fet to feet.  I wouldn't get 2 cosleepers- when they are small enough to share, they will most likelly to be swaddled.  After that you can judge on the transition to crib (s)... It is very common for twins to sleep together.  After DS came home from nicu, he would only fall asleep on the boob with DD piled on top of him while she was on the other.

ETA- sorry for all typos and misspellings- DS is eating now!

  • I have the original co-sleeper and I put the boys in it together with sleep positioners. This way they sleep together and get used to each others' noises but they won't roll on each other or anything.

  • you can only use 1 angelcare monitor per baby so you should prolly save those for the cribs.
  • I think many people have twins sleep together in the same crib.  I believe many doctors recommend it.  From what I understand, the benefits to them of being together outweigh the SIDS risks.

Oh, and the Graco website says this about the twin PNP:

"Bassinet for children up to 15 pounds (one child per side)."

I think this is very vague...is it 15 pounds total?  Or 15 pounds per side? You'd probably want to call Graco to ask.  If 15 lbs per side, total is 30 lbs., which is the same as the Original ARCS, anyway.

This. I've heard different recommendations from different pedis and different NICUs. Our hospital put the boys in the same bassinet (though they had a second available). Our boys shared an Arm's Reach Original Cosleeper and then a crib until they were 6 months old, when we stopped swaddling.

And the research on bed-sharing with a sibling is actually based on singletons of different ages, so it's hard to extrapolate to twins. I can see how, say, a 3-year-old with a newborn could cause a bigger suffocation risk to a newborn than another newborn who can't even roll over yet, kwim?

  • Thanks for all the responses.  Do you use any time on monitor when the are in your room or not because you're right there?

I like the idea of the one original co sleeper with the sleep positioners...

  • While we're on the topic, what kind of sleep positioners are recommended? I was told that a simple wedge was good, but is a more elaborate positioner better?  Wondering if I should have these on my registry...

  • we got 2 arms reach mini cosleepers from craigslist used - saved tons of money - they were in perfect condition (still are- and we plan to sell them soon, so in the end, they will have cost us VERY little if anything at all depending on how much we sell them for!)

we use angelcare monitors- so can not have them sleep together--- and don't feel comfortable doing that anyway.

worked GREAT for us- i wouldn't have it any other way.

  • Goldie- you were the one that got me thinking about it! I have been scouring Craigslist but no such luck yet!

When you use the angel care monitors do you have them set on both sound and motion... I'm still a little confused about how they work.

I also just want to thank you for how commited you are to the boards.  I put so much faith into your answers and you always put my mind at ease!

    Thanks again!

  • we intend on co-sleeping in our room. we registered for the twin pnp and if its not gifted, of course will buy it on our own.

we also have 2 cribs set up in nursery to move them into when the start sttn...we wait b/c they will be sharing room with DS since we got a house with 3rd br on 1st level (boo! and didn't anticipate getting pg with twins)
