Bassinet vs. Pack 'n' Play

Discuss.

My mom thinks I need a bassinet, and admits I will use it for only the first 2 months.  I told her I was looking into a pack n play that comes with a bassinet attachment, but she thinks it will be too big/heavy to move around the house postpartum.  I would like to avoid buying both, as we don't really have the storage room.

We do plan on getting a crib.

Let me know your thoughts ladies!  Thanks!

Re: Bassinet vs. Pack 'n' Play

  • I'm definitely not an expert, but I plan on just using the PnP as a bassinet in the beginning. I don't want to spend the extra money on a bassinet, and we don't really have the space, either. As for moving it, I think in the beginning it will be residing almost exclusively in our bedroom so I don't see shifting it around very often. My SIL is currently using a PnP as a bassinet in her room and has had no problems (their baby is 2 months old).

  • Why would you need to move the PnP around? With DD (and I plan to do this with DS too) we had the PnP in our bedroom at night so she was close by for feedings. During the day, if she fell asleep, I'd either put her in the PnP in our bedroom or let her sleep in the bouncy/swing. I never had to move the PnP around and it worked out great. GL!
  • We have a PnP.  I like that is will have so many uses for us in 1 thing.  We hope to have the baby in their crib in the nursery from day 1 but should something change, we'll use the PnP as our in-room bassinet.  We'll also be using the PnP for when we go on vacation anywhere with the baby (like when we go to the beach in July).  Plus it has a changing table on it & a play mat/gym feature which is great for at home on the main level or while on vacation.  As for moving it around, almost all PnP's (to my knowledge) have wheels on them so they're easy to move around if you absolutely must.  (I remember just a few years ago, the PnP my friend had didn't have wheels & that was a pain to move around!)

  • We are getting a PNP to use in our bedroom for the first few months. The one I picked out has wheels on one end so it's easy to wheel around. My sister said they are very easy to pack up (most seem come with a travel case) so I can't imagine it's NOT very heavy.

this exactly ... We're using a pack n play ... we'll be able to get more use out of it than a bassinet for a longer period of time ...

  • I have no idea if I will want to move it around the house or not - I guess my mom moved us around via bassinet when we were infants or else I don't know why she would mention it!

But the ones I have been looking at do have wheels - in case I get the urge to wheel it around.

  • This exactly.  A bassinet was just a waste in my opinion.  So LO will sleep in PnP until he's out out bedroom and into his own crib.  We've set up his crib and nursery, so when we're ready to transition, it's all waiting.
  • We plan on using the PnP or our stroller bassinett on a stand for the first few months...I don't want to buy a separate bassinett for our bedroom that we won't need after a few months.

  • We are just doing a bassinet b/c it is easier to move around, we don't have space for a PnP, and both of my sister-in-laws said it was a waste and they never used it except at the beginning for the bassinet feature.

  • We're using the PnP as a bassinet.

  • We got a PNP for DD #1 and it was awesome. This time around we will get a bassinet. Only because the PNP is a PITA to move around. Yes, they usually have wheels but are often too wide to fit through average door ways. So, if I wanted to move it, then I had to take it apart.

  • i'm having this same argument with DH right now. He thinks play yards are too expensive and wants a bassinet or moses basket.

He is just being difficult right now, he wont listen to me when i say that we will only use the basket/bassinet for a few months, but we can use the play yard up until baby is 25-35 lbs.

That right there is the reason why i don't want a bassinet, you use them for a few months only, and can cost the same as a cheaper play yard which you will use for a year.

  • I'm on the fence about this as well.  We are getting a PnP, but not sure if we are getting a bassinet too.

Is the bassinet part of the PnP safe for the baby to sleep in?   It doesn't have sides to it, just is a shallow spot to lay them in.  I know they aren't moving around yet, but I fear that out LO will somehow fall out.  am i being too paranoid?? haha

  • we used the PNP as a bassinet because my original bassinet was recalled. i don't think it would be too heavy, most of the have wheels on one side.
