Honest opinions please: would it be unreasonable to request tjat your MIL

Not clean with clorox if you notice that DC.and all of their clothes/blankets come home smelling like Clorox? *Edit to change to MIL

Re: Honest opinions please: would it be unreasonable to request tjat your MIL

  • This has always bothered me too.  They have to disinfect the changing surface, though.  As much as I hate bleach, I'd hate the thought of un-thoroughly disinfected poo germs more.

  • It really would. Sorry. Clorox is the best way to clean to ensure all the germs are killed.
  • Honestly?  Yeah, I think it would be unreasonable to ask that she not clean with certain products.  I don't think it would be unreasonable to bring up the fact that your DC comes home with a chemically smell and you want to make sure DCP knows to not do any cleaning with chemicals while caring for your DC.
  • They have to. It's part of state regulations. It's bleach water.
  • Yes. I'd be happy to know that they are disinfecting properly.

  • And the reason the clothes/blankets are smelling like it is because they have to spray the bleach water on all surfaces a couple of times per day (like cots/cribs, cubbies, toys, etc.). It's supposed to dry before a child comes in contact with it, but the smell is still there. Even cups/utensils/etc are dipped in it after washing.
  • She's not in daycare. MIL watches her and I guess she was cleaning while DD was there and she came home smelling like clorox. I guess I won't say anything but make sure we change her clothes right away
  • It would have been more effective on your part to say "MIL" instead of "DCP." Does she watch her for free or you pay her? If you pay her, you could ask her to make sure it doesn't get on her clothes, or offer to buy her something non-toxic to use.

This.  Obviously you have more flexibility if it's a family member watching her.   Asking a DCP not to disinfect w/ bleach = unreasonable.  Asking your MIL to avoid cleaning w/ bleach while watching your LO = very reasonable.  But I'd make DH do it.  :)

ditto. I don't use bleach cleaners around DD, so I wouldn't want someone else to do it either if they can avoid it.

  • Sorry ladies I had a dumb moment. I always saw DCP referred to as anyone that watches LO and didn't realize until now that it meant daycare provider
  • First of all, if you're going to edit anything it should be the "j" in "that."  Wink

But for real, if it were my MIL, I would say something.  Maybe not "please don't clean with effing Clorox," but something...

But then, I'm brazen like that.
