My mom mentioned rentingnor even searchin eBay/ craig's list for a breast pump. I know u buy ur own sgerlized attahcments but I wanted to see what u ladies thought. Good idea or bad idea[Poll]
I keep hearing that none except the hospital ones are a completely closed system, so, you never know if some milk got into the motor and could pass disease on to LO. Personally, it's on my "Must Buy New" list.
ETA: If you're planning to use for a while, renting is cost prohibitive.
that is what i keep thinking too... it kinda weirds me out! Now if i rent from the hospital maybe they will have the ones you are talking of... ugh i dont know what to do but we will probably end up getting one... they are SO expensive though. If I am gonna buy one might as well get one that is going to work well and got good reviews. $200 plus dollars booo
i borrowed one with my first child and this time i found one on craigslist-seriously barely used (some parts were still in plastic) and the lady i purchased from said she tried using it less than a dozen times. i paid $75 and i have new tubing and all the cups from my first pg so feel pretty confident in this. if you ask to pump at the hospital you get to use their bigger pumps and keep the parts from that! which work with the smaller pumps (at least this happened with my first child as i was concerned she wasn't getting anything).
good luck. you will find a very even split i'm sure about used versus new. but my thought is that like most things companies want you to buy new as they get the money versus buying used where they don't get the money. i wouldn't know where to even start on renting one-and typically they only rent the hospital grade type. but you could ask your dr. or local lactation consultant.
My pump is used (only once), but it's from a family member. I would NOT get a used pump from someone you didn't know personally. I have no problems with buying used, but not in this case. Either rent or purchase new.

Bad idea. The pump system is open, so there could be milk in places that you can't clean or replace.
