Toddlers: 24 Months+

How many panties do you recommend purchasing? What else should I purchase for potty training?

My 21 month old decided today that she is too old for diapers and refuses to use pull ups.  Only panties will do.Fortunately I already have a few, but I definitely will need more.  She is ready before I am.  I was planning to start within the next month but she has decided that now is the time so I am going to need to give myself a crash course in potty training today.

This is what I have:

5 panties

small potty (will get a seat for big potty)

3 potty training dvds (not sure which ones- they were given to me)

a couple of potty training books

Is there anything else that I need to purchase? I see that there are a few posts on ideas and such.  I plan to read through this board later tonight after bedtime/shopping for all the other posts on potty training.  Sorry if this question has been asked a lot. I tried googling but I am pretty much just getting lengthy articles or sites trying to get me to purchase crap from them.

  • You are definently going to need more panties because of the accidents. Sometimes they make it to the toilet but pee on their underwear while pulling them down. I think I bought 2 to 3 packages of 3-5 pairs in each and went through about 3 a day while training. Every child is different though. Also get some pull ups for night time or the underwear that have the extra protection in them and use them just for night time. I can't remember what the names of those are.

  • Probably 2 more 5 packs of panties.

My recommendation is to let her pick out some cool ones (princess, Dora, etc) to use as motivators/rewards and also pick out a pack of really boring plain ones (solid colors).

She starts out in the plain ones and gets to put on the super cool ones once she's put something in the potty.

Also if you plan to use a reward system - stock up.

For DS #1 it was M&M's (minis for pee and regular sized for poop)

For DS #2 it was small water balloons (but I'd blow them up with air)

You may want to consider plastic pants to go over the panties and some leggings or sweat pants to help minimize mess with accidents.

Make sure you're set on laundry detergent.  I threw all the accidents into the machine during the day and did just an accident load each night.

And last but not least - a heap load of a patience and maybe a bottle of wine for yourself once she's in bed at night.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • We have two packs of 7, and that seems to be enough since I do light laundry twice a week.

  • 15-20 pairs, but buy half of them in the next size up.  You won't need to have that many pairs once she gets PT'g down, so it will be good to have some in the next size.  But, you'll need lots of them for a few weeks until she gets it down.  You might also want to buy a couple pairs of plastic pants to go over the undies.
