Thoughts on used cribs/furniture etc...

I have been checking out baby furniture on craigs list and wanted some opinions about buying used...has anyone done it?  I am interested in crib/changing tables, stuff like that.  The mattress kinda freaks me out used, so we will likely just purchase that new.  Also, I have seen a  lot of warnings re: recalls.  Thoughts???

Re: Thoughts on used cribs/furniture etc...

  • We bought our crib, dresser, bouncer, swing, and portacrib off craigslist and are happy with all. Use common sense when you look, making sure that there aren't any defects and that the items meet current safety recommendations. I familiarized myself with the crib recalls be reviewing them on CPSC's website. I'm glad we did it. Many of the items we bought were practically brand new. We saved a bunch of money and waste. And we were actually able to get much higher quality items than if we had bought new.

But it's a personal decision. Do what you are comfortable with. Just don't buy a used carseat.

  • We bought most stuff new. We got a $99 crib from IKEA that works great and a $99 mattress. For a dresser we got the IKEA Hemnes dresses and put a changing pad on top of that. I wouldn't mind buying a used stroller. We got other things for free from friends such as a bouncy seat, a little bath tub, and lots of clothes.

I would def. check it out if you find a good deal and use common sense.

  • Both my crib and changing table are used, bought and given by different friends and my husband and I have been pretty happy with them both.  Just as long as you check on the government's crib safety website (??  I can't remember it off the top of my head) you should be ok.  I think cribs made after 1992 or around that date are up to current code.  Also, dropside cribs are no longer safe, so avoid those.  We also bought a new mattress.  But I think that saving all that money is worth it!  Especially if you like the shabby chic look.
