Talk to me about the NuvaRing

I had the Mirena IUD after my DS and I loved it (no thinking required, lol) but DH could feel it every time we had sex. He said it was like having a tiny little pigmy stabbing his penis everytime we had sex. (How's that for a cute little visual? Stick out tongue )

He's not super huge, but he's not circumscised, so I think he's just extra sensitive.

Anyway, I'm thinking of going with the NuvaRing this time. (Still not a lot of thinking required, just have to remember to change it). I had it when I was a teenager and I remember having a yeast infection every month, but, I was a kid and that could have been from anything (wearing my jeans too tight, staying in a wet bathing suit too long, etc.). Have you ladies had any luck with it? Tell me your stories - good and bad!

TIA!

Re: Talk to me about the NuvaRing

  • My story, I have gotten pregnant off of it 2x. Surprise! I also have 2 friends who got pregnant off of it. Obviously you will find a million stories like mine, or opposite, but that's mine!

  • I am interested as well because this is what I am thinking of using.

  • Never been on it personally, but DH's first wife was and he is adamant that I should use it too. So, it comes highly recommended from my uneducated husband. LOL.

  • I have heard several ladies on here say that they got pregnant on it, so that is my reason for skipping it, LOL.
  • Little one in my belly is a nuva ring baby.

I plan on going back to the patches once she is born. I never had a problem with them.

  • LOL at that visual!

I love the nuva- ring. I have been using it for about 6 years with no problems. And actually got pregnant on our 1st try from being off BC for only a month.

I like that I only have to think about it once a month, I can't feel it (and neither can DH) inside, I didn't gain lots of weight when I started it, it's been really easy for me. I plan to start it again after LO arrives.

  • I can not speak from personal experience - but a friend of mine mentioned that her DH could feel it.  So she switched.

  • Yikes! I am definately not trying to get pregnant again. (At least not right away, lol)

Thanks for sharing, ladies. Maybe we'll try Natural Family Planning instead...I did pretty well with it before. DH is OK with that method, he just hates hearing my alarm go off to take my temp on Saturday and Sundays lol

Do we have a NFP board? Or know of any ladies who are awesome with it?

  • I really liked it.  Once I'm done breastfeeding, I plan to go back on it.

You DH might complain that he can feel it, but you can remove it for up to 3 hours without decreasing the effectiveness.

I used it to have a period only every other month.  I tried to go 3 months, but my body always had breakthrough bleeding.  It's off label, but my doctor told me I could leave it it for 4 weeks, then immediately replace it to skip a period.  You can't leave it in for 4 weeks then have a ring-free week, but she said it's fine to do if you immediately replace it.  So I would leave one in for 4 weeks, replace it, leave the next one in for 3 weeks, then have a period.

I had no side effects other than frequent headaches the first couple months I was on it.

  • I used it awhile back and Im not a fan. I had more than one situation where after sex the nuvaring would be lying next to me or I would find it in my sheets after the deed was done. It was nice to not have to remember a pill all the time but once it came time to take out and get my monthly I would have extra tissue (sorry if TMI) come out and the dr said it was normal, I was disgusted and stopped using it after about 7 months.
  • i have used it for a couple years BEFORE i had DS. never got pregnant while using it. i liked how i was able to get pregnant easily once i got off of it. which is what we did to get pregnant with LO.

the only drawback is it WILL pop out if you have butt necket monkey sex. but you can put it back in and keep going. that's really all i can think of. i'm kinda nervous to go back on it after LO because we really want her to be the last baby. i'm going to discuss options with my doctor. i'm thinkin tied tubes.

  • I love love love it! I am SUPER fertile as in we only had to have sex once to get pregnant both times and I never got pregnant while on it so I think it works pretty well. I plan on returning back to it after LO is born. I would highly recommend it. I am also very prone to yeast infections and never have had a problem with that either.

  • I used the Nuva Ring for about 3 years before deciding to try getting pregnant.  I absolutely LOVED it!  I didn't have to remember a pill, it stayed put, and DH didn't notice it.  I also had no issues with the ring falling out.  The only thing is for you, if your DH noticed the IUD (which just leaves a string hanging out of the cervix), I would be concerned that he'd feel the ring even more.
  • I loved it. No complaints!

Just a warning though... DH felt it every single time. Although he said he kind of liked it. Wink

  • I used Nuvaring for 2 years and loved it. Super easy to use and couldn't feel it at all and my partner couldn't feel it at all (he said he couldn't anyways) I do recommend it. I stopped using it because I thought it was making my depression worse..not sure if it actually did cause I changed medications and never used the Nuvaring again.
  • I loved it!  I def plan on going back on it after LO comes.  In the very begining DH said he could feel it but that was because I wasn't putting it in high enough.  I had a fear it would get lost up there but it never did!  Never came out during sex or anything like that either.  I would recommend it for sure.

This was my experience almost exactly, except I only used it for 2 years and got pg in the 2nd month off of it.  I absolutely loved it and basically turned into a nuvaring commercial.  I'm sad that I won't be able to use it while BF.

  • it gave me a UTI twice. i was positive its what gave me the UTI but my doctor swore it didn't so after i got rid of the UTI and waited for my next period so i could try it again sure enough it gave me another UTI. otherwise it would've been perfect.
  • Mine came out durning or after sex (I really don't know at what point it came out).  I know you can take it out for a few hours but if I hadn't seen it, I would have never thought to check that it was still in.  That was enough for me to go off it.
  • I was on NuvaRing for 6 months and liked it. I'm terrible with BCP, so it was a good alternative for us.

I'm considering Mirena for after DD is born, but after your H's experiences, I'm a little worried!

  • I was on it before we decided to get pg.  I loved it.  Never felt it and DH never did either.  It's comfortable and it works.

  • I was on it for about 5 years before stopping to get pregnant and it also only took us one month. I really liked it and never had a problem with it. I highly recomend it.
  • I have been on every brand of pill created, but they all gave me weird side-effects (I was always late, sick, etc.).  The last thing I was on was NuvaRing and I loved it.  I would like to get back on that, but because of my GD, I'm not sure if it will be an option.

However, I think something in NuvaRing makes you extra fertile.  Wink I was only off for 2 months before I got pregnant and I have 2 friends that experienced the same thing.
