Does your baby have a dent in their chest?

My son seems to have a dent in his chest and it gets deeper everytime he inhales or hiccups. You could pretty much hold liquid in it when he inhales. Is this a cause for concern or just a newborn thing?

Re: Does your baby have a dent in their chest?

  • My baby doesn't have it, but my friend has it and he has had it his whole life. It's just something about him...he's actually eaten cereal out of it before (as a dare!). It was never a problem for him. Just something special:) GL!

  • Yes he does. I believe it's known as a barrel chest.

My DS was born with respritory distress caused by TTN and a pneumomediumsteinum (Spelling???).

However, some babies/kids/adults are just born with it and it's totally fine.

  • I have the concave chest thing.  I am not sure what the technical term is.  My mom told me that when I was born the doctors wanted to put a ball in my chest to push it out but she told them no.  Anyway, they just told her that it won't be an issue unless I start to have problems breathing which I never have.  The only problem I have is finding a bra that will fit correctly, which I assume your son will never have to worry about.  Smile
  • I also have this condition and it has a really fancy name that I couldn't even begin to spell here. If your pedi doesn't mention it next time you go, I'd mention it for sure.

Usually it is nothing and in my life it's been more cosmetic than anything but depending on depth it can affect your heart.... I was monitored closely as a child with this and a heart murmur and even occasionally as an adult. It is probably not a big deal, but for sure worth mentioning and asking your pedi about. There are varying degrees. Good luck!

  • Thanks girls! I'll definitely mention it to the pedi at his next appointment!
