I've just started this morning and feel like I've got all my ducks in a row: DD has had potty around the house for months and watched me go, sits on it with no diaper, new Dora underpants, recognizes when she pees and poops, taking her to potty every 15 minutes... what am I missing? She won't actually GO in the potty. Should I just let her run around in wet undies for a while? Seems like getting a clean new pair of Dora undies each time she doesn't go on the potty is counterproductive. Is that the problem?
Your experiences? Is this normal to start with? Do I just need to give it time? THanks!!
Re: PT help please! (XP from 24+)
It sounds like she's not ready to be potty trained. There are lots of schools of thought on PTing.
I tried EVERYTHING with DD#1 and NOTHING worked. I had to wait until she was ready to PT. She was ready at 3years1month old. Took 2 days and she was fully PTed.
GL!
1. Figure out what motivates her. Is it the Dora underwear? If so buy her some plain panties and set the cool Dora ones by the potty and tell her she can put the Dora ones on as soon as she pees in the potty.
For my 1st it was M&M's. 3 mini ones for pee and 2 regular sized ones for poop.
For my 2nd it was balloons. Small water balloons I'd blow up the second I head the pee hit the water.
2. She needs to learn the preference of staying dry. Let her stay wet until she sees that it's uncomfortable. For us that meant plastic pants and sweat pants over the underwear to minimize the mess while keeping the wet feeling next to the skin.
She needs a chance to get wet a few times before she can realize the feeling that comes BEFORE she gets wet and understands that as her signal to go use the potty.
3. Every 15 minutes might be overkill. By all means up the liquid intake to increase learning opportunities but once every hour or so should set you up to catch something. (and about 20 minutes after drinking)
4. Another thing you may try is to have a favorite stuffed animal introduce the concept of using the potty and getting the reward. I read this in a book and it really made the light bulb go off for my first. I had the rabbit sit on the little potty and then I poured pee and a melted hershey bar into the potty behind him where DS couldn't see. Then I went bezerko celebrating the pee and poop in the potty and made a big production about giving the rabbit the reward. I pretended DS wasn't even in the room. We repeated this a couple of times saying NOTHING to DS about him doing it and eventually he asked me if he could have an M&M to which I replied: "Sure Honey! As soon as you use the potty you can have M&M's too! Do you want to use the potty like rabbit?"
And off we went. That way potty training seemed like HIS idea in his mind.
