Transitioning from Swaddle to sleep sack?

I am going to keep Lilly in a swaddle for as long as I can but when we need to do the transfer, how do you do it...I mean, with the sleep sack she can just wack herself and wake herself up...Do they have something you can transition them into before going to the sleep sack and free arms?...like a sleep sack with no arms but it is looser so they can move around quite a bit on the inside?  and then work on the sleep sack after that?

How did you transition?  How did it go?

  • Hey!

Alex loved his swaddle and I thought it was going to be a huge deal giving it up, but like most things, I think it was  harder for me than it was for him.

When she is ready to be out of the swaddle she'll let you know... she'll start busting out herself.  My advice at that point, just make the switch, it may be a couple rough nights but she'll get the hang of it.  that's what happened for us anyway.

She is so cute!!  Time flies, hunh?

  • Can I ask a related question? Charlie loves to be swaddled, but I too eventually plan to move him to sleep sacks. Typically how soon do you transition them to sleep sacks?

Time DOES fly...it is insane!...I can't believe how fast it is all going but we are loving every second and taking note of every moment and milestone!

I'm not sure but I know that Lilly would not sleep well in a sleep sack right now...she would totally wake herself up...I am thinking about getting a woombie for her:

She will still be swaddled and not able to get her arms out to wake herself but it will allow her to move her arms whereas in the swaddle me, she can't because they are pinned...I am thinking that if she gets used to moving them around that would be a good step in transferring her to the sleep sack eventually.

    I've never seen that before!

  • That looks like a baby straight jacket!

Like Heather said, she will let you know when she is done being swaddled and then you can switch.  You might have a few tough nights, or she might switch no problem.  R liked the swaddle for a few months and then was done, no problem with the transition at all.  P it took a few nights to transition him, but it wasn't as hard as you think it is going to be.

I know, doesn't it!?!  I was reading about it and it actually seems pretty cool...since it stretches with their movements like in the womb, it doesn't hinder development....Not that the swaddle blankets do but I have read that if you use the swaddle blankets too much that it can sometimes hinder development.

  • Emmalee never liked her arms swaddled, she hated it the moment she was born. The pedi p!ssed her off in the first 24 hours because he swaddled her with her arms folded in it. So as soon as she could kick out of the swaddle we stopped. That was right at 6 weeks, which was also when we learned she was a tummy sleeper too.

Lilly loves being swaddled...I am hoping that the transition won't be rough but from the sounds of if (per pp) it seems like they let you know when they are ready and it's not too bad.

  • Each child is different, Emmalee has never really cared whether she was in a sleep sack, swaddled, or pjs. As long as she was on her tummy, she was happy. Once she grew out of the sacks, I did not buy any more.
  • I wouldn't worry about it.  Matteo LOVED being swaddled.  He let us know.  When he started fighting it we took one arm out, then we did naps sans swaddle, and then we waited.  We tried a couple of times to take out the second arm but he just wasn't ready.  We actually just took out his second arm this past weekend.  That's right at 8 months!  It was not a struggle at all and he did great.  He has hit all of his milestones on time.  The only time development is pretty much equal across the board is during the 1st trimester.

The wombie thing freaks me out.  I vote go one arm at a time and slowly loosen the blanket.

  • You can get a swaddle sleep sack.  That's what we did.  Halo sells some.  It has a thing to hold their arms down and when they are read to have their arms free (for us it was around 3 months) you just remove that part and it's a regular sleep sack.
