Feel free to use lotion. However, stretch marks are genetic. You'll either get them, or you won't.
And a friend who recently had a baby had no stretch marks. That is, she didn't have any until she gave birth. Her husband laughs when he talks about watching them pop up with every contraction.
Your chances of getting stretch marks can be influenced by many
factors. Genetics play a major role in whether or not you will get
stretch marks. If your mother or sister got them during pregnancy, you
may be more likely to get them yourself. Besides genetic history, other
factors include: ethnicity/skin tone (fair-skinned women tent to get
them more), nutritional history (a sensible diet helps skin to stretch
better), skin condition (dry skin tends to be less elastic than well
nourished skin) and the amount of weight gained during pregnancy (also
how rapidly it was gained). If you are carrying multiples, carrying a
large baby, have excess amniotic fluid or are naturally thin or small-
you may have a higher than average incidence of stretch marks.
So when people say genetics will decide if you get them or not, its like saying , Im going to be overweight because my parents were. Not necessarily, so do everything you possibly can.
I used Bella B Tummy Honey with dd and never got a single strech mark but like the pp said it's genetics (my mom doesn't have any either). It does feel good when my belly gets itchy or dry and right now I like using it on my c/s scar because that gets really itchy.

I've heard its genetic however, my mom and her identical twin got them terribly with all of their pregnancies... but I didn't get them for either of my pregnancies thus far. ?I used lotion all the time - mostly for the itching!! ?
My mom doesn't have them, but I sure as heck did! She swore by Palmer's cocoa butter lotion. I am going to slather it on this time and hope I don't get anymore.
With DD, I started towards the end of the 1st trimester but my skin was itchy too so it was easy to remember. I have no stretch marks and my mom has TONS so I was terrified. I really think the lotioning helped some. ? I don't know. I will do it this time also.
I started with cocoa butter & hated the smell so I switched to Curel Pregnancy lotion.
Hate to tell you but stretch marks are genetic. Use whatever moisturizer feels good, though!
This exactly. I was serious about using lotion at least twice a day and no matter how much I tried to prevent them I still ended up getting them the last month or so of pregnancy.
Even my dermatologist told me that lotions and creams don't really work. It is a genetics thing. BUT my grandma and mom both had 4 kids and have no stretch marks and I still got them around 37 weeks with DS. So you never know.
FWIW, I don't know that I would buy pregnancy-specific cream - I think that's a marketing ploy. I would buy something thicker than that - like Eucerin Daily Calming Cream, Aquaphor, Glysomed, etc. Water based creams are just going to keep your skin dry - it will feel better while its on, but when the water evaporates, you're dry again. Something that is glycerin based will keep your skin from getting even drier... and the deeper the moisture, the less chance of getting a stretch mark, since all it is a scar deep underneath your skin.
Ditto pp's there's little or nothing you can do to prevent them if you are prone to them. So, use something that eases the itching and smells nice. Don't bother with Mustela or some expensive pregnancy cream, totally a gimmick. I used victoria's secret body butter with DD #1. Minor stretch marks that have faded completely.
I?ve read that one of the best things you can do is eat a lot of foods with antioxidants since they provide your skin with the best means to defend itself ? elasticity. Although my mom swears by vitamin E oil

I just use whatever lotion I currently have.
Ditto the PP's that it's genetic.
But cocoa butter sure does feel good when you get to the itchy skin stretching phase.
