Any tips for running on the treadmill???

I absolutely hate running on the treadmill, but there are times that I have to.  Any tips for speed or incline for walking/running?

Re: Any tips for running on the treadmill???

  • Hi! I dread the treadmill too! I like to add intervals when I start getting bored. I'll sprint every .10 miles then slight jog or walk the next .10. It helps keep me interested, beefs up my endurance and intervals are supposed to be great for toning. :)

  • I'm a pretty regular treadmill runner, but there are definitely times I get bored.  I have found that intervals really help.  What I end up doing is creating a "fun" playlist on my iPod and with 1 song I'll jog then the next I'll increase my pace to a sprint or really fast run.  Makes it go by a lot faster and definitely helped with endurance.  Good luck!
  • Definitely what everyone else is saying in terms of intervals.  It'll not only help you burn more calories and increase your speed, but it makes running more interesting.  While watching TV, run during the commercials, walk during the show.  Or, run for one song, walk for the next.  Just keep mixing it up so your body doesn't become accustomed and you don't become bored with doing the same routine all the time.
  • Ahh, the dreadmill. I only use it when it's too cold or too late to run outside.

If you put in on a 1.0 incline it's a bit closer to outside running.

  • Ditto the 1.0 incline (you can also do 0.5 if you are looking for a easy mod workout).

But I like to either do intervals or hills on the tread, keeps me occupied b/c I'm switching it up and I have short mini-goals throughout my longer workout.  I have a TV to watch while running too, which for me is a way to switch it up from running outside w/music.  Starting on the hour if you can, helps you kinda get into a show and before you know it 30 minutes have gone by.  A friend told me she likes to buy a Her fave shows on DVD and watch an episode a workout (ends up occupying her for about 45 minutes).
