Still having issues with DS's skin.... WWYD

We are still having issues with S's skin. I am doing everything I can to help, while trying not to overdo it- since it is likely a hormonal issue.

DH says not to worry about it, but this seems worse to me than standard baby acne. Plus he is almost 4 months, shouldn't it be better by now?

We go to the DR on the 14th, so this will be adressed then, but I always feel like my Dr. dismisses it like it is something I shouldn't worry about..... I think we need to see a pediatric derm.

Here is apicture from yesterday of my sweet boy, what do you think??

  • Poor baby! Although he is still super-cute :). I agree that it seems a little late for baby acne. Most of the baby acne I have seen has been from the earlier times-- like 2 weeks- a month after birth. Could it be an allergic reaction of sorts? I know you are doing no dairy, correct? I would ask to see a pediatric derm for sure. Does he scratch at it at all?

  • Thanks Jess!! I appreciate the feedback. =)

I am still doing dairy free- kindof. I have been slowly adding in dairly the last month or so and he has been doing just fine. I am not sure if his digestive tract is just better now, or no more colic or what... but he still had this skin issue before that so I don't know.

DH had terrible skin, so I expected my boys to have some issues- but like I said- this seems like alot for such a little guy!

  • oh and no, he doesn't scratch it or is bothered by it at all- which I am thankful for!
  • Ditto what Jess said.  If it is bothering you - take him so that you will feel better about it too.

    He is adorable though!

  • 4 months seems a little long to be battling baby acne.  Although, Griffin had it until about 3 months.  The dr never thought twice about it either.  I would definitely bring it up again or look into the ped derm.  Good luck!

  • Personally, I would go ahead and try to get an appointment with a pediatric dermatolgist now.  One thing I've learned is that the nation and Cincinnati in particular has a shortage of pediatric derms.  We had to wait over 6 months to get Charlotte into one (it was orignally supposed to be a 7.5 month wait, but there was a cancellation).  Go ahead a make an appointment, then cancel if it clears up.

I hope it clears up on it's own very soon and that you have nothing to worry about.

  • Brenna had sever eczema last winter.  It looked a lot like what I see in the pic of Sawyer.  Could it be eczema that he has? We tried everything to avoid prescription drugs, but ended up having to get a script for 2.5% Hydrocortisone ointment to apply three times a day, nightly baths, a humidifier in her room, and aquaphor on her whole body and face morning and night.  It finally went away.  Now that we have cold air and dry indoor heat, I am starting to see some dry patches again.

Here is a PIP of DD last winter when the eczema really got bad.  I don't know if you can see it well or not, but her face was raw looking in patches and spots.

  • I agree with the others.....I don't think it is baby acne.  I think it is eczema.  Justin has extremely dry, sensitive, red skin, especially on his face, and looked like this at Sawyer's age.  This cold dry winter weather makes him flare up badly every year.  I would definitely ask the pedi about it, but I think a dermatologist needs to address it.  Justin's has never really gotten better -- we've found some things that work better than others, but it never really goes away.  We are now going to try the dermatologist route at his pedi's recommendation.

  • I don't know what it is, but if you suspect it could be eczema, I'd put OTC hydrocortisone on it twice a day for a couple days and see if it helps. Or you could try Aquaphor.

  • Brandon still had some baby acne at 4 mos.  Here's some pics for some comparison.  Here's a pic from last Christmas to show you the mother zit he had.  He was just under 4 mos.

image  We actually postponed some pro shots b/c of that zit.

Here's another pic where you can see some detail in his face:

image  That was a week after Christmas- so he was just after 4 mos.  He had a little bit of speckling, and we were told it was exczema.  We started using Aveeno body wash and bathing every 2-3 days (usually 3).  We also became vigilant about putting that Aveeno lotion on daily and making sure that he didn't come in contact with things cleaned in scented laundry detergent (we washed our sheets in F&C for a long time).  All of this helped.  However, if that's what you're already doing, then I would definitely push for the pediatric dermo.  GL!

  • Shoot.  That 2nd pic didn't show up as well as I would have liked.  Anyway, in looking at the 2 on the same screen/similar size, I think it's worth pursuing the dermo.  GL.
  • You girls are the sweetest..... I appreciate the feedback!

Jack had severe eczema when he was younger, so I am familiar with that. Although in the picture it does look "patchy" it really is just pimples.... sometimes even white heads.

I am going to call about the ped. derm, I know it takes a few months to get in.

I know in the scheme of things, this doesn't matter, but I still hate it that people always notice his acne. =(

  • Dermatology Associates in Florence on Ewing. Ask for Dr Molly Eisner 283-1033 . You'll probably have a 3-4 month wait to get in so make the apt asap.
  • If it bothers you, you should definitely have it checked out. I'm happy it doesn't seem to itch him though. He's an adorable little chunk!
