My take is that memorizing does not equal reading.
From what I've seen of that program it's not teaching children letter sounds but rather to memorize how certain words look.
I'm a huge fan of the Letter Factory series of DVD's by Leap Frog.
Jace knew all of his letters and sounds by about 15 months and is actively sounding out words to read at 2. I think his learning his letters so early came from being exposed to those DVD's while his older brother was watching and learning his letters and sounds.
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
I agree - memorizing the way words look is not reading. If it is then both of my kids could read before they were 2 They most certainly memorized the words on the pages of their favorite books
I don't think those babies in the commercial could read any words that weren't specifically taught in the video or on cards... they couldn't sound out a word that they hadn't seen before.
Will it hurt your kid - heck no. Will it teach them to really read - heck no
And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.
as a former Kindergarten teacher - i say - please don't do it.
it's the lowest form of learning - route memorization, repetative.... and boring. Please let your babies be babies - not drilling them with flash cards and videos to try and teach them somethign that they will learn naturally if you read to them every day and talk to them every day.
it makes me sad to think parents are drilling their kids so young like that. Just let them have fun being kids for a few years!
As the PP have said, I wouldn't waste my money on it. I'm a kindergarten teacher and don't agree with it. They are just memorizing and not really reading. Plus, why do you think your child needs to start reading at such a young age? Let them be care free and play as long as possible. They will have to do plenty of school work later. I would much rather Ben be outside playing and having conversations with him than sitting at a table memorizing words.
