Engorgement while pregnant - what to do?

I'm doing cabbage leaves, just started today though.

I stopped BFing cold turkey last week per my drs office.  Since then, one of my breasts is so hard and engorged.  Weird because I had pretty low supply and was weaning and feeding my LO less.

Last night, some of the milk came out, but it is still big and hard (the bb)...is my body making more milk??

I know usually they say ibuprofen, but I can't really take that while pg.

  • Ugh...try taking a hot shower.  That might give you a good release.  When I first had my DD and again when she was STTN a hot shower always helped me with this.  Cabbage leaves are supposed to work wonders.  Sorry, I have nothing else.  Good luck!

  • First -- did your doctor tell you you had to stop BFing just because you were pregnant?  If so, that's incorrect.  If you want to, it's perfectly safe to nurse while pregnant.

Second -- even if you don't want to/can't nurse, can't you pump or nurse just a bit to get rid of the engorgement?  I think the risk with pumping when pregnant is that nipple stimulation can cause labor, but I would guess that danger is only later in pregnancy.
