Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I feel so lost with solids/need advice please

I want to be the one to introduce new foods to DD but all the books I have read said to try not to introduce things late night in case she doesn't do well with it. The problem is that I don't get home until 6:30/7pm and she goes to bed between 7:30/8pm. So what do I do?

Do I introduce new foods on the weekend and just have her eat that food for a week before introducing another?

Do I risk it and give it to her before bedtime?

Do I get over myself and just let MIL introduce stuff but under my directions?

Any other suggestions? Ugh being a working mom sucks :(

  • personally, i would do a new food each weekend.  it will take longer to run through all of the foods but you will get to see her try things and you can control it.  after introducing a few new foods, you may feel more comfortable having your MIL introduce something in the AM mid-week.

  • Your first thought sounds good to me.  Just introduce the new food over the weekend and then let MIL feed her that food throughout the week, then do another new food the following weekend and so on.  It will be useful to do it that way so you can tell if she is having any allergic reactions.  I introduce one food at a time for about 5 days because of my family hx of food allergies.   GL!  Have fun!

  • Do it on the weekend when you can do it and then let MIL carry on with that same item during the week. After what you say about MIL, I don't think I would trust her to follow what you say anyway?

My DD goes to bed around 9 and I will probably feed her at 7 every night. I won't send somthing to day care without trying it first at home.

  • I'm the SAME EXACT way...I like to introduce the new foods.  For the most part, I do new foods over the weekend and then feed the same food over that week.  Some things I've let my mom introduce - like peaches.  It's hard to let go, i know but sometimes you have to.  I've also introduced new things at night.  I haven't heard that rule about it not being good.  Sometimes ignorance is bliss.  :)
  • Could you give her new foods in the morning?  You could tell your MIL what she has already had that morning so if she starts having an adverse reaction she knows what to tell a medical professional if it comes to that.  Maybe that might work.

  • I don't feel comfortable starting something new at night. I would not "risk" it. Sure, one allergy is just hives but a serious food allergy could be trouble breathing. I wouldn't want to give LO something new then put them down to bed and not be able to see that s/he is in distress. But, I'm also a big time worrier and very cautious about things.

I would start something new on a Sat morning (and I have) and give that to your LO for the week. Three days is the minimum recommendation for trying new foods. Some books/docs recommend 5 so what is another day or two on top of that?

Once you've tried giving LO a few new foods and have gotten to take pics and see her expressions maybe you won't mind letting MIL do it. But, for now, and for you, I would do it on the weekend so you can experience these new things with her.

  • Thanks ladies. I could try new stuff in the morning but if its anything like cereal, I won't have the time lol. I think what some of you have said is right-once I do a few, I probably won't feel the need to be the only one introducing.
  • Do it on the weekends.  It will take longer to get through the foods, but you won't miss out.  Maybe if you see your LO's reaction to green beans, it won't bother you to miss peas for the 1st time.  Then you can see something fun like pears for the 1st time.  I wouldn't do it at night.  It will just stress you out!

  • Once they had a handle on a few things we started introducing new foods at night. So far so good but we've learned our lessons on a few things.

Prunes are great for constipation but make them crazy gassy before bed as does oatmeal.  We do those for breakfast only now.

  • I've been introducing over the weekend. Then after no reaction, I will send the food to daycare. If I pick her up early and can give her something in the afternoon (like 3pm) I will try during the week.
