I've had the best luck with the Carter's socks. The ones that are kinda scalloped at the tops with different prints on them. I've gotten most of them at JC Penny but of course, Carter's sells them.
I had major sock issues early on too...but these have been the best for us so far!
We found some at Target with the velcro things above the heels that are AMAZING!
I'm gunna look for these...how do they work?
There are two little tabs that you hook together with the velcro after you put them on. They are on the back of the sock, and right above the heel. They sort of pull the sock a little bit tighter above the foot, so they don' t slide at all.
trumpettes for us too (the ones that look like sneakers, ballet slippers, etc) but my 5 mo olds are growing out of them & they sell a toddler size that I'm assuming would be too big. Also Baberoo, I have some that look like crocs- again, starting to get too small on them though.
Hanes! We found a 6 pack at Target of Hanes brand socks in the baby aisle. They are MAGIC! We had a hell of a time with socks, these say "6-12" on them, but then the back of the package says "birth-12" and they fit him perfect and STAY ON from the time I put them on until bedtime. They don't even come off when I putt off his pants to change him!

These have been the best socks I've used for both girls. You can also find them at Kohl's. They're frequently on sale there for approx $9 for a six pack.
Mudpie's. They look like little Maryjane's. I've had no problems w/ them coming off. I've seen them at specialty stores, and at a Hallmark store. They're a little pricey (6.99 for a pair), but it's the best money I've spent.
I've had great luck with Gap brand baby socks. (never would have bought these but they were given to me). Even better, though, are zutano fleece booties. These things are magic. Love, love love them, and my LO's feet are finally warm.

Totally agree! Worth every penny! I've found them on ebay for like $2 a pair but then you have shipping. But still...worth it and super cute!
Four words: Zutano Cozie Fleece Booties. They are little booties with snaps around the ankles - they are so soft and comfy and NEVER come off. He wears a pair pretty much every day in lieu of socks. I LOVE THEM, one of my top must-haves.
I do like the Trumpette best of all the socks we've tried.
