Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what is going on with my supply?

LO is constantly needing to eat and I feel like he is spending more time sucking/chewing than swallowing. ?And when I pump I do not get nearly as much as I used to. ?I have maybe supplemented with formula 10 times or in the past month and occasionally he will get a bottle of BM in the middle of the night. ?My boobs also never really get engorged anymore...but are they supposed to still get that way?

Is this a supply thing or is he just going through a growth spurt? ?Last night I bf and gave 1 oz of formula and he slept for five hours straight and then just bf and he slept for another 3 1/2.?

Oh, and he only had little poops over the night and no poops this morning still.?

Re: what is going on with my supply?

  • How old is LO?  My DD is 23 days and I feel like she spends more time sucking/chewing than swallowing as well.  She naps well so I'm assuming that means she's not hungry but I don't really know, which stresses me out.

I thnk I may have a foremilk-hindmilk imbalance so that is my current stress with BF-the BF anxiousness seems to never go away for me-I hope it does one day soon or I might have to give her formula.  Everytime she cries I worry it's b/c my BF is inadequate.

Sounds like a growth spurt. You may not be getting as much from the pump because before the growth spurt that was extra milk, and now baby needs it...

As for the engorgement - again depending on age, your supply may have regulated. I am re-lactating as I stopped supplementing DS now that he is back to birth weight, and only now am I getting engourged again. Otherwise it would only happen overnight when he'd sleep like 5-6h.

  • He is one month today. ?I hate being anxious over BFing but it is so hard when it can't be measured so you know for sure that your kid is getting enough.

  • I'm with you Fanni-I never expected to feel stress like this over feeding her.  One feeding at a time is how I'm trying to get by these days.

  • I am sure he is okay.  He is probably just going through some phase.  If you are really worried, you can take him to a place that has a Medela scale, like a hospital or breastfeeding store.  There, you can weigh him before and after feeding, to see exactly what he is consuming.
  • wow, they have scales like that? ?
