Shopping & Shower timing (dumb ?)

OK I feel stupid even asking for advice on this, but I'm going to anyways...

I have two upcoming showers; one this coming weekend (9th) @ 31 weeks and one in a few weeks (23rd) @ 33 weeks.

I have a $200 gift certificate to BRU and I've been debating when I should use it.  I was thinking after the 1st shower but before the 2nd.

On one hand, I want to give people a chance to buy off my registry, plus I know the money would come in handy for anything that I don't receive at the showers.

On the other hand, I'm in "go" mode and want to get as much taken care of sooner rather then later.  I have most of my "large" items (nursery is done; have infant car seats/travel system) plus my BIL has several items he can give me from his kids (PNP, infant tub, swing, baby carrier, & some clothes) should I not receive them at my showers.

Any thoughts/advice?  TIA

Re: Shopping & Shower timing (dumb ?)

  • If it were me, I would wait.  If you arent able to go out and about after the second shower, I would send DH or someone else with the card and a list and tell him what to get.

Why waste your money if someone else would have bought the same thing?

  • I would wait until both showers are over.  You might have duplicates to return and you can knock it all out in one trip after the showers.

  • If your pg is uncomplicated and you are still able to get out and shop, I'd personally wait til after the 2nd shower just b/c of the poss. of duplicates, people forgetting to say it was for your registry (and you going out and buying it then having to turn around and return it, etc.). I was glad to still do shopping up til the very end, but I was still able to go about as normal in terms of being active.

If you feel better doing your gift card shopping after the 1st shower, my advice is to be sure and save all receipts (you only have, I think, 45 days til after purchase at BRU to return) and be sure to tell BRU that the items you are purchasing are on your registry (that way, if people want to buy for your 2nd shower, they can see what's been purchased/what's left).

P.S.--When it gets to be 2 wks or less before your EDD, BRU should send you a 10% completion pass for your registry. You may want to use that on your last run to BRU, be it between showers or after both. If they don't send it to you, ask for it at customer service. They will print you one in store.

  • I understand not wanting to wait! But it seems like waiting would be the best thing, like the pp's said. Hope you get lots of good stuff at your showers!

  • WAIT.

There is so little that you need RIGHT way - wait and see what is purchased for your 2nd shower... gift cards can be used any time- and trust me you will be going back to BRU to buy things constantly - even if you get EVERYTHING from your registry- there will always be more things you want--- if nothing but diapers and formula.

  • i agree with everyone - I would wait, and honestly if things get complicated you always have online to use the g/c.  I have to say, at my shower, i got no bottles, no towels and 4 sheets.  I would not have thought that - I took my g/cs and went the week after and spent a fortune on those things.  (i am not bf so I needed a lot of bottles and they are not cheap)

I would wait.  You'll always need to get stuff for them well after they are born, it will be nice to have a giftcard to use rather than your own money.

    this!

  • Wait until after all your showers.  Many people buy off the registry, but there are also a lot the don't, so you may end up having duplicates or just things that you can't use, so you'll probably end up with store credits too.  So, that being said, you will find yourself running to BRU at least once or twice a month after the babies are born for odds and ends that you never thought you'd need.  ANd, that 'free $' is always nice for diapers, formula, and even cute outfits as the babies get older.

Resist the urge - I know you want to buy stuff, but you'll be buying stuff for your babies for the rest of you life!  : )

  • I'd wait until after your 2nd shower...you'll need that gc for stuff later! :)
