NIFR: PSA for Dog Owners

Did you know that raisins/grapes are toxic to dogs?  Tonight, our dog got into some chocolate and we took him to the vet ER.  When I mentioned that there COULD have been some chocolate covered raisins, the vet freaked.  Which made me about shiiit myself.  Turns out raisins/grapes can be toxic to some dogs.

The dog vomited about an hour or so after eating (we got home and found the aftermath) and the vet gave him a shot and hydration so hopefully he will be ok.

I feel terrible because I didn't have the chocolate far enough away on the counter and he got up there.  He was my husband's dog before we met and I was afraid DH was going to be really mad at me (rightly so).  And of course I am scared that the dog might not make it through the next couple of days.  So I start sobbing about how we shouldn't be TTC because I can't even keep a dog alive and that maybe that's why we haven't gotten pregnant because I would be a horrible mother (I drama queened out).  He told me that we'll get through anything and this is a learning opportunity.

So I just wanted to pass along this warning because neither of us knew about the raisin thing!

  • Hope your dog is going to be okay.  Did you know that onions are also supposed to be bad for dogs?  It's crazy the things that aren't good for them.

This and also potatoes upsets their tummy and gives them bad gas! But I did know that about raisins!

  • No, I didn't know that either!  Holy carp - we're supposed to check on him a couple times tonight to make sure his heart isn't beating too fast or anything.  I told DH that I would get up with him since I feel so guilty.
  • Sweetie, please don't feel too bad. It was an honest mistake, and it really could happen to anyone.

Here is a helpful list of known toxic foods and plants for dogs.

Good luck. Hugs for you and T&P's for puppy.

  • i knew this because my beagle had a three-day hospitalization due to raisins!

this website has a list of people foods poisonous to dogs:

sounds like your dog will be fine though since you got him to the vet right away. (((hugs)))

  • I knew about raisins but potatoes? and I just found out about the onions yesterday. I feel awful because at Thanksgiving my dogs had a lot of mashed potatoes and stuffing ( loaded with onions) and my big one "Big Girl" had explosive diarrhea for a few days. Thanks for the info. my girls eat a ton of people food.

  • Don't beat yourself up about it. Also, keep in mind that dogs recover much faster than humans. Now you know to push the chocolate away from the edge of the counter.

Kids like dogs, get into things they shouldn't and your reaction is exactly as it should be. You are scared for your "child" and guilty about not watching him 24/7. But Dogs, like kids, can't be watched 24/7... and they will fall, get hurt, eat something they shouldn't, and we learn as we go....

Keep TTC, I think your reaction shows you are well ready to be a mom,

3 yrs ttc, 3ivfs, 4 iuis and finally a baby boy! And then a girl to follow. 2 under 2!

Really? Then how come my vets "anti-diarrhea recipe" has potatoes in it?

  • Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts and the websites.  Very educational.  I'm feeling better today - I just spazzed because I felt so bad.  The dog seems like he is doing ok too.  So hopefully we are through it.
  • I am sorry about your dog. Don't feel bad. I hope he will be okay. I did know grapes and rasins were bad, but only becasue I was giving my dog grapes and when I told a friend she told me. Thankfully he only had a couple.
