Question about Strep B from a 3rd trier

I tested + for strep b.  My ob said that it's nothing to worry about, it's common, and they will treat me with antibiotics during delivery.  However, I googled, and now I am VERY worried about it.  I didn't realize that it can cause such problems for LO!

Were any of you SB+, and if so, did your LO show any symptoms after delivery?  Thanks!

  • I was + and it was not a big deal at all.  I just had to the IV antibiotics before delivery.  DD was perfect!

  • It's really not a big deal. You just don't labor at home, you get to the hospital as soon as everything starts and get hooked up for antibiotics. :)?

    ?

  • I was and they hook you up to a penicillin drip every 4 hours for 30 minutes to treat it. Once the baby gets that, things should be fine. Aubriana didn't show any signs of anything negative associated with GBS.

  • Googling is horrible for stuff like this!! :o(

I think your chances of giving it to LO if you don't have meds are 1:200, and less than 1:500 if you get the abx.

I wouldn't worry about it - some Mama's refuse the meds when + because they don't like antibiotics - try not to worry!!

  • I tested positive, got the antibiotics in my IV, and everything's totally fine.
  • I had it, received the antibiotics and LO shows no signs.
  • They gave me 2 rounds of antibiotic during labor due to testing +... no problems at all. I think putting the IV in was the worst part!

  • The chances of LO getting it without meds is 1 in 1000. With meds is 1 in 2000.

DD #1 contracted it from me. Yes, its scary. Yes, there is a reason they treat for it. DD spent a week in the NICU on some pretty powerful antibiotics, but when she came home, all was well. Its something to be aware of, but not something to be super worried about.

  • I tested + and DD was perfect :). Just be sure not to wait to go to the hospital either when your water breaks or you start having regular contractions. I had my water broken at the hospital (after having contractions for more than 24 hrs) and started getting antibiotics right after that. I received two bags of IV antibiotics and it was about a 6 hour time frame from when my water was broken and when I gave birth. But, it's really not a big deal, you will have plenty other things to worry about. GL
  • I was positive but had an emergency c-section.  DD was perfect.  No complications with her at all.

  • I was positive plus I'm allergic to penicillin.  So they had to give me a different antibiotic that was scheduled every 12 hours.  Well, my labor only lasted about 11 hours so I was only able to get one dose.  They just kept us an extra day to make sure LO was ok.  Everything was perfect!

FYI - this doesn't mean you will be positive with every pregnancy.
