TTC After a Loss

More coherent, less PIPy summary of RE appt

Basically, my hormone levels indicate I either have a) like 4 eggs in existence or b) a whole crap ton of worthless ones. Normal AMH levels for a 26 year old = 3.0-4.0. Mine = 0.8.Options: keep trying naturally, but most likely keep having mc after mc, waste potentially valuable time since my ovarian reserve is falling faster than Apollo 13; or IVF. IVF = mucho $$$$$$$ = no can do = FML.

Re: More coherent, less PIPy summary of RE appt

  • :( Colinda I'm so sorry your appointment didn't go better and the RE didn't have any other options for you.  I hope you'll be able to work something out with IVF ***huge huge hugs***

  • I am so so sorry.

Your RE had no other suggestions? They couldn't put you on a payment plan for IVF? Could you take out a medical loan (do those exist?) Would it be crazy to put it on a low interest credit card?

    <---- thinking out loud.

Yes, there are payment programs. Yes, we have a credt card w/ a limit that would handle this. But I have a very very wary outlook on debt, and I am still having problems coming to terms with the necessity of IVF vs/ my personal thoughts on it, in both in financial and philosophical terms.

  • I am so so sorry.  That is really sh!tty news.  Sending very big ***hugs***.

I am going to say something that is so not my business, but maybe the payment plan should be seriously considered, IF it is something that you both really really want to do.  This is just coming from a person that has a ridiculous amount of debt, on something far less important.  And we are surviving.  (Over $120,000 in vet school loans, DH's debt from a previous business that failed in his twenties, a mortgage, and a job that will never match that amount of debt.)  Is it really a terrible amount for IVF?  I'm not sure.  Like I said, not my business, tell me to shut it, but the IVF may be a more worthwhile debt.  Just don't want you to feel like you have no options.

  • I have nothing wise to say, just that this sucks and I'm sorry.  I have no idea what IVF costs, but don't rule it out right away.

  • Kat, trust me, this is something we will be talking about. A lot. In the days to come. I am more than open to hearing other people's take on it. That's why I posted it here. I understand where you're coming from, I do. And I know it probably would be worth it. If it worked. But what if it's all that money for a fail? Or to find out I have no viable eggs whatsoever? Or what if I get pg with twins (he transfers two...no we don't have to, but it ups the odds....so another decision) and then how the fark do we afford 2 kids and do I quit my job? Gaahhh. I wish I were a fvcking jobless, stupid tweaker who dropped out in 9th grade. Then I'd have 6 kids.
  • I am so very sorry.  That really sucks and I totally understand your reservations about doing IVF.  I would be very reluctant to go into debt for it too when there are not any guarantees.  I am so sorry that you are in such a sh!tty situation.  ((hugs))

I'm sorry, hon.  I don't know what to say about all of those possibilities.  :(

  • I am so, so sorry. Like Lindsay mentioned, they have some pretty nice credit cards available for medical procedures. We have had to use CareCredit for dental work a few times and it usually doesn't carry any interest for 12-18 months after the procedure. Maybe check into that. Hope it helps! :)

  • I'm so sorry!!  How incredibly frustrating. (((HUGS)))  Did your RE think Clomid might be worth trying, or did he just jump straight to recommending IVF?  I know you O regularly, but Clomid can also help to mature the eggs better...the Peri I saw said "it helps cook the egg", and therefore might help with poor egg quality.  Maybe worth a try??  I dunno...I'd at least ask.  Sorry I don't have an article or anything, I'm just going off of what the Peri told me back in August...

  • Thanks, Abigail. It'd be worth asking about. His office is checking on what, if any, meds would be covered, since they're the same for IUI and IVF, and my ins covers IUI. I was kind of stunned and had a hard time asking questions, so he basically told us he'd talk as much as he could , give us all the info, let us go home and let it all sink in, and then we could come in to talk to him again, or call to talk everything over again, whatever we want.
  • I too wish I had something more helpful to add, but I just wanted to give you big (hugs) and say that I'm sorry about this news. :-( You'll be in my T&P and while I know there's a lot of things for y'all to think about, I hope that you'll figure what works for you.?
  • Colinda, I'm with many of the other girls that don't really have any advice to give but wanted to express my sorrow for you and your situation.  It really sucks and I wish your news was better.  I have faith that you and your DH will make the best decision for you.  :::big bear hug:::

  • I know little to nothing about it, but didn't someone post a shared-risk program or something like that, where, if it didn't work, you got a return on your $ for IVF?

Gar. I wish I could remember that link.

I'm sorry for this news.  It's a lot to take in.

Yeah, they did but I don't remember who or what. Or where, for that matter. FFS, I thought I was just gonna be on the hook for 50% of polyp removal surgery. How I wish that were the case....

  • Colinda, I'm so sorry to hear about this dx.  That truly sucks and is just so unfair.  You must still be reeling from such a blow.  I hope you find a good option for you that doesn't require waiting a ridiculously long time.

  • Oh Colinda I am so sorry you got such bad news today. I am sure you and your DH will talk over options in depth but here are my thoughts:

#1 Even though this news sucks the big one, it is not over yet. By that I mean, hope for you is not over yet. I would first and foremost get a second opinion. I remember you said you really like your RE and that's great and he could be the very best Dr. in your area but I would still do some research and get a second opinion. I would also get on the internet and to the library and do your own research, which I can guess by reading your posts for a few months now, you will be doing anyway.

#2 You still have options. There are lots of ways to finance IVF. If you and DH decide you can't take on that  burden, there are still other options like adoption. You will end up with the child you are meant to have, if you believe that it will happen and you don't give up.

I'm so sorry again, I hope that the right path to take makes itself clear to you and your DH. I'm thinking about you.
