Ok - so I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on Tuesday. I tore really bad. and have a ton o' stitches. it is hard to sit / walk / pretty much everything.
Anyone have any tips on relief? I have the peri bottle to rinse and tucks and a spray. They only gave me Motrin for the pain and swelling.
Re: Ok - Who had 4th degree tears?? Come in...
Sit on your boppy pillow when you're sitting. It's sooo much more comfortable that way. I know this sounds cliche but, it will get better. The first couple weeks were the WORST for me. I cried a lot from the pain but then I woke up one day and it was SO much better.
I'm going to suggest keeping your tucks pads in the fridge...that felt amazing! Also, soak one of your daughters diapers in water and stick it in the freezer. Then you can sit on that...I seriously iced for the first 3w or so because it just made me feel better!
Congrats on giving birth to your little girl :-)

You will always be loved & missed our sweet angel.
I didn't have 4th degree, but I was pretty torn up (straight to my bum, TYVM, DD!) with a ton of stitches, and was SHOCKED at how much pain I was in post-delivery. The ice diapers are a life saver. Also, DERMOPLAST SPRAY. Buy stock in it. If you don't have a sitzbath, going out and getting one was the best thing that ever happened to my poor frankengina.
Similar to PP, I actually went out and got a hemorrhoid pillow instead of sitting on the boppy. Worked wonders. And hang in there - it will get so much better! One day I woke up and just suddenly could move without feeling like I was tearing in half!
I had a third degree tear and I was in so much pain once I was home for a day. Don't be up and about any more than you need to. Make your SO wait on you and make your meals. Minimize going up and down the stairs. These things can irritate your tear/stitches and cause swelling.
Like PP said, if the hospital gave you ice pack/pads, those were so helpful and soothing. I used the peri bottle and just pat dry. If the pain is worse than in the hospital, call your dr. I could hardly walk and was almost in tears so I finally called and was prescribed Tylenol 3, which was a life saver. Before that I was taking Motrin every 6 hours (I think) and Tylenol every 4 hours.. then also Tylenol 3 on top of that. If you aren't already, take a stool softner like Colace (I took the 50 mg 2x a day for a couple weeks). This will make it so you aren't straining to poop and irritating the stitches.
I tried witch hazel but it burrrrned!
Oh yes, Dermoplast worked wonders!!!
THe first week was the worst. Keep using the peri bottle and if they gave you a sitz bath do that nightly as well (if not a regular bath with no bubbles). I sat on a regular pillow when I had to sit upright, or just sit on your side if you are lounging on a sofa.
It will get better! I never thought I would feel normal again.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I posted something like this after I came home from having my DS. I had a 3rd degree with about 40 stitches. I was not prepared for the pain of that. I knew labor and contractions would be painful but I wasn't ready for how painful my tear was. The LOVELY GIRLS on this board helped me by telling me about the Dermoplast spray. Its like $9 of HEAVEN. It was wonderful. Also, I still have pain but it is so much better now. Also, sitz baths are awesome. GL! Hang in there!!
THIS! I could not do Sitz baths-- so uncomfortable for me. I felt like I was riping apart while sitting on it. In the bath tub-- i was in heaven! Not easy getting in and out, but so so worth it!
It does get better!
