how often do you let LO just "kick it"?

I always feel bad when I leave DS just hanging out in his swing quiet but alert.  Or if we leave him to check out his crib mobile or waterfall.  Even just leaving him on the playmat.  We interact with him a lot, but we leave him to himself a lot too.  part of me feels like it will help make him independent and that he will let us know if he is bored or unhappy, but there is still this part of me that is 2nd guessing everything!!

How often do you let LO "kick it" alone??

  • If she's content, I let her be. I usually talk to her, especially if she's being vocal- she usually babbles a lot when she's doing tummy time or laying on her back on her play gym mat. Usually if I get quiet contented time like this out of her, it's not for a very long time- 10, 15 min max. Enough to grab a shower, make a quick bite and eat, or get some laundry folded.

  • DS "kicks it" about an 2 hours or so combined a day.  If he is in his swing he normally sleeps, but sometimes in the swing or bouncer he will just stare off and be content.  I am not going to complain I think he is learning about his surroundings when he is doing this.

  • Like PP, if he's content I leave him be.  I certainly wouldn't want someone in MY face all the time ;)

    very good point. :-)

  • We leave our DD alone if she's content and enjoying herself. Usually after a feeding, I'll talk to her and play with her, or read her a story, and then when she's had enough of that I usually put her in her swing or bouncy seat and she amuses herself until she's ready to fall asleep. She loves her bouncy seat and really loves playing with her toys that are hanging on it, she really babbles and smiles when she's doing that. I think it's good for them to have alone time and enjoy their surroundings and figure out what's around them. You don't need to be in their face all the time, in my opinion anyway!
