Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Question from 3-6 - weaning off pacifiers

Okay, so I don't think we can keep playing the pacifier game with our two little ladies.  We are in and out of the nursery ALL THE TIME.  They wake up every 45 minutes looking for the pacis and fuss/cry if it's not put back in their mouth right away.  This also means that they are waking each other up.

Did anyone wean your baby off their pacifier yet?  If so, did you go cold turkey?  What did you do to replace the comfort that they found from the pacifier?  Should we stop swaddling them so that they can suck on their hands? Also, how bad was the transition?Thank you!

  • you could try to swaddle arms out and see if that works.

we just stuck it out until we sleep-trained at 6 mos. we recently reintroduced it since he can put it in by himself.

bed-sharing is probably not an option with two huh lol? that saved us since we didn't have to physically get up every time.

  • Sorry, I am not much help. Chaz weaned himself around 5 or 6 months. One day he just refused to take it, hasn't used it since.

  • i didnt wean L off yet but you going in there to replace it is the nature of the beast. L started putting it in her mouth herself around 4-5mo so hang in there!

  • Your LOs are so cute!

I would try to stick it out until 6 months/CIO, but I feel like they just aren't sleeping well due to the pacis.  If we could change that and have them sleep better (for their sake and ours), I'd rather do it now...

    Thanks for your responses!

Hmmm...so maybe we should work on de-swaddling so that they can replace their own pacis?

I never feel like I know what the right answer is!

  • We weaned from swaddling around 3 months.  We started with one arm out, then two, then no swaddle. At this time he still used a pacifier occasionally.

Then at 5.5 months (right after a vacation where he used the pacifier a lot) we went cold turkey and took it away.  It took 2-3 days to completely wean. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. We did not replace the pacidier with anything.

  • It was that way for us too at 3-4 months....and a month later all was good (he was able to keep it in longer at night or go without it while sleeping).  I'm so glad he has the pacifier because when he was teething it was the only thing that kept us all sane.  At 6 months their sucking reflex is stronger too, so I'd wait for you to get over that hump if you can.  I think that's why they recommend weaning after 6 months.

Now he can go a couple hours without the pacifier and just a couple weeks ago he couldn't go without it for more than a couple minutes.

It'll get better, I promise.  Give it time.
