How long was your first night? (10min, 20min, etc) Was your LO really putting themself to sleep after the 3rd night? Did you do ferber by the book or a different version of CIO? Lastly, how awful was it really?
Our first night (this second time; we had some setbacks) was about an hour, off and on. He figured out standing in the crib though, so that didn't help.
He went from waking every 30-60 mins to sttn by the second night!
We used the sleep easy solution. it's essentially ferber but explained better and more helpful imo.
it really, really sucks. i cried as much as he did the first night. :-(
First night was 52 minutes of crying. LO was putting himself to sleep starting the first night but it required crying. It STILL requires crying for him to fall asleep but it's much less (1-2 minutes). We read the Ferber book and followed it for one night. Then we realized he got so much more upset when we went in there to soothe him so we did extinction from then on. It was and still is difficult to hear DS cry but he is now STTN (he was getting up every 90 minutes for 8 months straight -- I was exhausted) and his naps are getting longer and more predictable. As hard as it is, I don't regret doing it.
First night was 24 minutes of crying (I cried the whole time). Next night was 17, next night was 12...then voila! STTN!
We had to do it again for naps (those were harder) but now he goes to sleep like a champ. I lay him down in the crib totally awake, he pops his thumb in his mouth and goes to sleep.
We did Ferber by the book. I would strongly recommend reading it before trying it. I made my husband read it, too, so that he could help me be strong if I wanted to quit.
We just did it again after the holidays totally screwed him up.
The first night was AWFUL. He cried for an hour. I thought I was gonna loose it, if it hadn't been 6 degrees here I would have gone for a small walk.
By the third night he put himself to sleep withing 5 minutes.
I agree with pp, going in and out of the room to soothe himS. sometimes makes it worse. I may try the Easy Sleep Solution. We also need to train for naps. He falls asleep on the bottle too much. Ferber doesn't work for naps for my DS.
DD put herself to sleep starting the first night... after she cried for a little over an hour The second night, she cried for 20 minutes; the third night, about 30, and the fourth night, about 20. After that, no crying at all. But the fourth night was just like four days ago! But so far, she's doing great. We found out the first night that us going in and "soothing" her actually irritated her more. It was obvious she wanted to be picked up, not patted, so we stopped going in there and she calmed herself down every few minutes and then started crying again until she stayed calm and went to sleep. We read Ferber's book and planned to follow it but it turned out that just putting her to bed drowsy and letting her cry and soothe herself worked better for HER. WE wanted to go in there. Do what works best for you. It was tough but so worth it in the end! DD goes to bed at 8 sharp, wakes up at about 7 and has a bottle (during the week when I'm at work) or BF, then right back to bed (awake but drowsy) and goes back to sleep on her own and sleeps until 8:30 or 9. Good luck!!
