Anxiety/Panic attack last night...

I have a history of anxiety/panic attacks before I was pregnant, but I have had a symptom free pregnancy. Up until last night. I thought my heart was gonna beat out of my chest, I was just freaking out and could not sleep at all. Then I jsut kept having nightmare after nightmare that I had lost my baby. I was just freaking out all around. Luckily, i've calmed down but has anyone had this? And what do you guys do to relax?

Re: Anxiety/Panic attack last night...

  • I've had some high anxiety moments (mostly due to my job) so I don't know if any of this would work for you.  If I have a particular panicky moment, I've been taking walks (with my iPod).  I find the fresh air and moving around really helps.

I'd mention this to your OB.  They may have suggestions or let you know if at any point there is cause for concern.

  • ugh, those are the worst.  i'm so sorry.  i have, thankfully, not had an attack since before i became pg again.  but when they hit, i do the usual breathing exercises just to try and get my heart to stop racing.  i usually need DH nearby to talk me down too.  i try to prevent them by avoiding any caffeine, even chocolate and i also drink chamomile.
  • Ive been high anxiety all today, it's awful :(

The things that work for me best are talking it out with either my husband or my mom, doing some breathing, and keeping my mind occupied. Dwelling on it always makes it worse for me. Good Luck :)

  • i feel ya.  i actually found out i was pregnant because i went to the Dr to get put on anti-anxiety meds and they made me do a pregnancy test first.  it was definitely rough the first few weeks getting used to the idea of an unplanned baby, and not being able to have meds.

when i get panicky, i have DH tell me stories about all the fun stuff we're going to do with our daughter and it helps me focus on the good, rather than the scary what ifs.

i hope your attacks subside, it's paralyzing to have them.

that is so great.  seriously, what would we do without our H's to distract us?

  • I've been a sufferer for almost 5 years. I was symptom free during pregnancy also, until around 34 weeks. Then they came back with a vengence. I just breathe into a paper bag, and try aromatherapy and meditation to calm my nerves.
  • Thanks girls! I've had a much better day today but I still have little episodes when I dwell on it. I'm definitely going to be trying your ideas.:))
  • I've had a couple of highly anxious moments, also thinking something was wrong with my LO. I am terrified of a cord accident happening. I find talking with my DH and BF helps.
