TTC After a Loss

Our Penny is sick

And not feeling well!  She's been sleeping all day and will growl at Franklin if he gets too close.

Poor girl. I think she is taking a while to feel better from her vaccines from yesterday. I'll take her in on Monday with Franklin (he goes for his neutering) and see what the vet says.

But I hate seeing her not feeling well.

Oh, Baby Bean! We will always miss you! With us for 6w3d -- June 9, 2008.

Re: Our Penny is sick

  • Poor girl.  Hopefully it's just the vaccines making her feel bad and it will wear off soon.  Glad you are getting her checked on Monday, but hopefully she'll be back to normal before then.

I hope so too! Ever since we found out about her FIV, I've been worried and she's seemed tired. Ugh!

  • Feline AIDS. :(

She went in for her booster shot for another vaccine and they suggested that she get tested since she was a stray.

What I did was give her high calorie wet food b/c she wasn't eating too much, and I gave her tons of lovin'. The only time I get her to a vet straight away is if she doesn't eat for two days in a row and/or doesn't go to the bathroom. Those to me, are not great signs.

Is your cat small? zoey's (a dog) about 7 pounds. The smaller the animal, I think the more complications to vaccinations they can have.

Thanks for the advice. She's only eaten a little today. We're keeping an eye on her if/when she goes to the litter box.

She is tiny, only about 18months and is about 8 pounds. I'm trying to pet her often. She just looks tired.

  • Our cats are over 3 years old now, but I remember they were knocked out by their first round of vaccines when they were little.  I think lethargy is a normal side effect of the shots.  Don't worry too much yet - sounds like you are doing everything right.

This is very true.  As for FIV, have you talked to your vet about interferon??  It's an anti-viral that we often use for FIV cats to help boost their immune system.  It doesn't cure FIV, but it sometimes helps them have more longevity.  If you have other cats, you're definitely going to want to get them tested, and if all negative, then get the cats that are negative vaccinated.  Although the vaccine isn't 100%, it provides some protection.  You will not want to bring any other cats into the house, as you would be risking exposing those cats as well.  And if you were to board your kitty, you'd want to be sure to disclose that she is positive for FIV.

    I know it's a scary diagnosis...but I hope your little girl does okay.  :-)

The vet did not mention anything about interferon, but I've been reading about it. Looks like it is something done at a later stage. Can it be done now? She's in stage 2 (I think), where she appears healthy.

We do have another cat, he's 4-5mo old. He was tested at the vet and he's negative for FIV. The vet said we could get him vaccinated, but like you mentioned, it will not keep him 100% from not getting it.

We're hoping not to board the cats if we can (to save money) but now really would not want to so we don't expose her to anything.

Should we pursue the interferon for Penny and the vaccine for Franklin in your opinion?
