2nd Trimester

Braxton Hicks?

What do they feel like? I'm 23 weeks along and this week I've started feeling like there's a pulling or discomfort in the sides or lower part of my stomach. This often happens when I get up from sitting. It's nothing alarming, but when I realized I was more uncomfortable or having more trouble even getting up than usual, that's when I started wondering if it's BH. I know they there can be a hardness if you're having contractions, but the sides of my stomach (like on each entire side of my belly button, reaching to my back) is hard.

Advice? TIA!

Re: Braxton Hicks?

  • BH usually start at the top of your uterus and go down like a wave, but I guess those could be them as well.  Otherwise it's just normal stretching pains and I wouldn't worry.  There are a lot of aches and pains that will just keep getting worse!

  • Sounds like a BH.  I had them frequently with DS 1 and have them with this pregnancy as well, though not as often.  They are not painful, but sometimes they are slightly uncomfortable.  Dr. said as long as there are not more than 6 in an hour not to worry.

  • That kinda sounds like RLP (round ligament pain)....but it could be BH cuz I started having them around 22 weeks....I'm no doctor!! lol

  • What you're describing sounds more like round ligament pains.  Those usually occur when you stand up or move suddenly. BH contractions feel like your stomach is hard and tight on top for a few seconds, then it releases.

  • Well, thanks to everyone. I'll mention it at my next appointment. Like I said, it's not alarming, just uncomfortable. I know I was having RLP a while back, but that was different than this. This is more of, well, like a contracting tight feeling, but at the same time I don't know that it happens so I could count the instances. It just kind of is. Don't know if that makes sense.

    Anyway, thanks! Happy new year!

  • I think I had the same as what you're describing. My doctor concluded that it was RLP. She said it was normal for it to get intense and fade in and out. Since they strike when you move I'd guess that's what it is.
