Should we dream feed?

So this question doesn't have to be answered tonight (since hopefully many of you are enjoying your New Year's) but... should we be doing a dream feed around 10pm?  The twins eat in general as follows:

4:00 am - they wake up wanting to eat

8:30 am (they usually only eat a little bit)

11:30 am

3:30 pm

7:30 pm <bedtime at or around 8:30pm)

Do you think if we wake them up to eat at 10pm they will sleep longer??? Thanks :)

Re: Should we dream feed?

  • i havent had my babies yet- but i do babysit for someone that dream feeds.. its a miracle if you ask me... Although if you are putting them down at 8:30 i would try to wait longer than 10:00, maybe 11:00 or 11:30.

  • I agree with you and the logic behind it... however during the week both my husband and I have to be up at 5am - it is better to go to bed at 9pm and start the day at 4am than stay up until 11pm and wake up at 5am.. thanks for the input though!
  • We go back & forth on this...(our twins are 5 months) & I don't really have the answer for you but here is my experience thus far.

We used to dream feed around 930/1000 when they were still waking multiple times, so we'd do the 630 feeding, then bedtime at 730ish, then the dream feed, they'd wake at 1/2, then again at 5 and then back to sleep for an hour or two.  It didn't really get us much extra sleep since they were still waking so much, it just made things a little more predictable.

A couple weeks ago they started rice cereal  b/c of their reflux and were getting fed at 630ish, waking between 12 &2 sometime, and then again at 5-6ish.  We thought maybe if we dream fed at 930/1000, they wouldn't wake again til 3 and then we could guarantee a 6-7 wake up to feed which would be great since they're starting day care next week. Last night was our first night trying & they were up for binkies & restless from 11 til 230 when I finally fed them...I don't know if it was related to the dream feed or not so we're trying again tonight!!!!

I think that if mine slept as long as yours & had the potential to go through til a little later in the AM via a dream feed, I'd definitely give it a try for a couple nights. The dream feed is just soooo easy, I love that they just eat & go right back to bed!

  • I've never heard of dream feeding, what is it exactly?

Basically you feed them while they're asleep, barely waking them. They will amazingly suck down a whole bottle and not really wake up the whole time.

  • i would defenitely dream feed around 10pm --- at that age they can easily get through the night and not need that 4am bottle- but probably not with their last one being at 7:30...

all 3 of our boys had a last bottle around 10pm and STTN until about 6-7 at that age. (they started STTN at 8w).  We dropped the 10pm bottle with the twins at 5mo.
