Breastfeeding

Ok.. why a breast pump?

I plan to breastfeed exclusively and I know that other women who do this also use a pump. Why is a pump necessary?

Re: Ok.. why a breast pump?

  • you don't really need it if you aren't going to be working while nursing. If you find you want/need to start, you can always buy it at that time.

  • Initially I pumped to help build supply and because she was in the NICU and I wasn't always there to feed her.

Now I pump so DH can give her a bottle and help do night feedings, and so that I have the ability to leave her with someone (DH or someone else) and still have her get breastmilk rather than formula.

Additionally, I'm building up a freezer stash in case I got sick or something and couldn't feed her for a couple days.

  • I am so glad I have a pump.  If I were going to be a SAHM I wouldn't need it at this point, but at first I felt like she never ate enough and the girls would get rock hard.  Pumping really helped that and I have been able to save a little.  Plus its really nice to know that I can leave her with DH and he can feed her if I need to run to the store.

  • You never know what will happen. Your child could have latch problems and you need to exclusivel pump, etc.

I didn't get one until after breastfeeding was established. I got a single one, so I can make bottles from DH to feed when I run out, etc. I adore it.

  • I am a SAHM and I am so thankful I have a pump...I used it initially to help build my supply and have a small stash in the freezer in case of emergency but now I only use my pump for when i go out w/out LO.  I usually pump a fresh bottle so DH and I can go out to dinner or I can go shopping.  I don't use it very often but am soooo glad I have it for those instances...I also am lucky my DH found a Madela double electric pump for $50 dollars on Ebay including shipping...I had the pieces for the pump, which my hospital gave me for free so I didn't have to worry about sterilizing.  It works just as good as the hospital grade.

  • I don't go out often, but I've gone a few times and someone has given ds a bottle of pumped BM.  I didn't buy the pump until after DS was born.
