oatmeal eaters...

what do you add to make it taste better?  I've been putting it off because I find it disgusting (unless it's the instant flavored stuff, but I heard that's not as effective).  So what do you put in it to make it taste good?

  • i am the same way, I hated oatmeal for the longest time.  But when i got home from the hosp with LO my mom started making it for me.  She squeezes pancake syrup into it to make it a bit sweeter.  I also add raisins, they don't so much help with the taste, but it makes it more enjoyable. 

    With the syrup, it's actually become one of my favorite things to eat!  :o)

  • The instant stuff works just as good - trust me! I just get Quaker Maple Brown Sugar. Also, starbucks sells oatmeal and you can get the packets of nuts, raisins, and brown sugar - very good! I say put whatever you want into it. I hate bland oatmeal.

     I really don't care that much for oatmeal either but I love the starbucks oatmeal with all of that fruit and nuts!

  • Baked Oatmeal....delicious!

     3 cups oats, 1 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt - mix together

    add 1 cup milk, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup melted butter, 2 tsp vanilla

    optional: add favorite fruit (apples, raisins, cranberrys...)

    bake at 350 for 35-40 min.

    I make this on Monday and eat if for breakfast for the week.

  • Almond butter or peanut butter and some mixed frozen fruit (cooked with the oatmeal of course!).  And I always sprinkle some raw sugar on top :)

  • I like to add coconut and raisins, sprinkled with cinnamon.
  • I usually make steel cut oatmeal but I used to eat a lot of regular old fashioned rolled oats.

    blueberries, brown sugar, flaxseed meal

    dried cranberries, brown sugar, flaxseed meal

    microwaved diced apples, brown sugar, flaxseed meal

    A scoop of almond butter and a small scoop of pumpkin butter

    My 3yr old loves putting maple syrup on his oatmeal instead of brown sugar.

  • PPs have great ideas but if you are really hooked on the instant kind, make a bowl of instant and add in 1/4 cup of whole oats with 1/4 cup or so of extra water!  Extra fiber, same flavor :)
