Has terbutaline worked for anyone?

I started having contractions at 24 weeks. Now im 28- been on the med for a week and still having mild one. I am having twins so the dr says its normal. Has this medicine stopped pre term labor for anyone? Just curious because a lot of websites say its nothing more than a placebo... Grr!

Re: Has terbutaline worked for anyone?

  • It worked quite well for me!

Oh and if it was a total placebo it most likely wouldn't cause tremors, you to feel jittery, or headaches among other things. It's typically used for bronchial inflammation/ spasms from my understanding.

They may need to put you on something stronger than the terb.  Magnisum sulfate tends to work the best from everything I've heard.  I can't say from personal experiance though.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks- i agree- if it was a placebo why is my heart racing?? I was actually fine after a week- so more side effects.. My ob (who i love) percribed it to me so i trust it, but today when i mentioned to the peri she said "oh that stuff doesnt wor"... oh well- im just hoping to make it to at least 34 weeks.
  • I've been on it for almost two weeks now and no contractions!! Big Smile At first the side effects (the headaches. the jitters, the racing heart) were pretty bad. I've learned to take it with  food and lots of water. That helps. Or maybe my body adjusted quickly.
  • Ok totally unrelated to the post but I had to tell you Pipigirl that your puppy is absolutely adorable!!!!!!
  • I used it to successfully stop PTL with LO #2 and officially am on it again!  Makes me a little shaky, but seems to do the trick!
  • I had terb shots to stop PTL 4 weeks ago. Now I am on Procardia.  The combo of the 2 has helped for 1 month.  Good Luck to you!
    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Notes:
  • I failed Procardia, then got terb shots in the hospital and they tried pills while I was admitted to see if they would work...they didn't, so now I am on a terb pump. I was in the hospital 3 separate times (admitted) in about a week and a half, and I haven't been back in the week I've been on the pump. I still do have some contractions but they aren't usually a problem, or can be stopped with an extra terb bolus.

There are some people who believe that terb doesn't work. Like any drug, it works better for some people than others. I can definitely tell a difference with myself. One of my twin mom friends was on it from 25 weeks til 36 weeks when she delivered. One of my other twin mom friends was on it for awhile and then wound up in the hospital on mag at 31 weeks and delivered 5 days later. So...you just never know, I guess.

    Thank you!

  • my dr mentioned the pump. what exactly is it, and what does it entail?
  • I went on Terb at 24 weeks.  It worked off and on until 32 weeks (in and out of the hospital 3 times, going through the Terb protocol and/or being sedated when things got really bad), when I had to go on the mag (which is MUCH worse, BTW).  I stayed in the hospital on the mag until 34 weeks, and then delivered 5 days later.  I'm so thankful the Terb allowed me to stay home for more than half of my 10-week bedrest... so I have to say I'm a fan!  Good luck!
  • I was on terbulatine from ~25 weeks to 30 weeks as needed (five or more contractions an hour) and had the shot in the hospital once.  It worked pretty well, but when my fFN test came back positive this week they switched me to procardia-XL, which they said works better long term, with terb working more as an immediate fix (I'm sure each doctor has varying thoughts on their preferences).  It took a few days for the procardia to start working, but it seems to be slowing things down now.  What I like about the procardia-XL is that I don't have the jittery side effects that I got from the terbutaline.
  • I was on Procardia but only XL for a short term because it wore off, I took 10mg every 4 hours. I was on a terb pump in the hospital for four days after receiving multiple injections of terb and getting mag to stop labor. At day 4 my blood pressure shot thru the roof and my pulse would not slow down, I was not sleeping without high doses of sleeping medications and the risk for a heart attack was high. At that point my docs took me off the medications and that night I went into labor (Christmas Eve) I had my LO at 34 weeks and 3 days (Christmas Day) he is still in the NICU but he is doing well and expected to be able to come home soon. I am not telling you all this to scare you, but understand all this stuff has side effects that follow you, like during labor my blood pressure was within heart attack range. It took me a week for the effects of it to finally leave me. Make sure you get the steroid shots for your babies lung development it was hands down the best thing I ever did.
