2nd Trimester

would you take a 6 month old baby...

on a 10 day cruise? we have a trip planned with the ILs for SIL's 30th bday and I am very skeptical just b/c if we have an emergency, its not like we can pull over and go to the nearest hospital. Although, I'd love to visit, we (or I) won't really get to enjoy the trip and particpate in the daily excursions bc i have to watch our baby. Which I won't mind too much...Has anyone taken their 6-month old on a cruise?? How was your experience, do you recommend? TIA!!

Re: would you take a 6 month old baby...

  • Hell yeah I would. It honestly isn't that hard to travel/ have fun with a baby in tow. While I haven't been on a crise, I've traveled alot with DS w/o issue. And why wouldn't you be able to go out on the excursions and such? Just pack a well prepared diaper bag!

  • I'm with you on the worry - but, I'd plan to go...

Looks like DH, LO and I will be heading to South Africa when LO is around 6 months old...for 2-3 weeks...while they do have hospitals and things there it's just not the same...that said...DO IT :)

  • My sister and BIL took nephew on one when he was around that age and had no issues. They have Dr.s on the ships if anything drastic goes wrong so if LO got an ear infection or something of that sort they would be able to take care of it there.?

    I would totally go!?

  • I would.  I went on a cruise in April and a couple had 4 month old twins.  They were having a ball and got so many great pictures.
  • We just went to Jamaica with DD but she was just one at the time. I would do it and maybe gma and gpa will watch LO for an afternoon so you and DH can do something fun!

This. They have medical personnel on board (an MD, not just a nurse) so I wouldn't be worried about that. As far as excursions, you might pick something different than you normally would have, but it's totally doable. Just take a carrier and a well packed diaper bag.

  • I would go they have doctors on board. You will be able to enjoy your trip with your LO in tow.
  • When we go back to Cancun our little one will be around 6months! and It's not gonna bother me taking it lol....
  • We travel and fly a ton with our kids and I agree that traveling with kids is no big deal, but I would not do a cruise.  That is just me though.
  • I would.... If our plans work out we will be cruising with a almost 2 year old and a 6-9 month old..... Cruises are well equipped for emergencies and minor medical problems... Plus the newer ships even have nurseries : )

Also, it sounds like you will have others onboard with you so you will have lots of people to watch LO if you want to head out for a drink : )

  • Just check with the cruise line on the age they'll allow.  My family is planning to go to Alaska July 2010 and while we were TTC we were trying to figure out if we could go if we got pregnant.  We found out that they wouldn't let a woman past something like 30 weeks travel and the baby had to be at least , maybe 9 months old.
  • We have traveled a lot with DD and had no issues but we always use timeshare so we have at least a one bedroom condo.  DD had constant ear infections too so for us the idea of a cruise was out not because we were worried abotu medical staff and help but because when DD has an ear infection she sleeps really bad which makes us really tired if we have to share a room with her and on a cruise unless you get a suit the rooms are small.

Now that DD is 3 we were planning on doing the disney cruise this spring (her ear issues are better) but I am pregnant and we cant' travel at 20 weeks.

I would be worried about 10 days but if you feel okay with it go.

This little one will be 9 months when we do disney and a 3 day cruise.  The onlything is while at disney we will stay in the two bedroom resort condos at disney.  I am bad i like to have room to move around.

  • I would totally go!  It's perfectly safe to take a baby on a cruise.  There are medical personnel on the ship.  In fact, when I went for my honeymoon we had 2 "code blue" calls while we were there.  Later learned that meant that 2 people (different nights) stopped breathing.  Both survived and one was taken off the ship at one of the ports to receive further medical treatment.  There are a lot of old people who cruise so they have to make sure everyone is safe.

As far as the excursions.  Go on them, the baby will do just fine in a carrier or stroller.  No you can't really go snorkeling with the baby unless grandma or grandpa wants to watch the baby while you go but why not a beach trip or shopping trip or some other fun excursion?

  • We love to travel and DH really wants to go, I guess I am just being paranoid. I think it would be easier if we traveled to one place and stay there (in a hotel room, on land :)) the whole time instead if being on the cruise ship and stopping at diff ports??!?!? I am just thinking about the worst case, i would just be really upset if we were so far out in sea. btw, we're going to the south pacific (bora bora, tahiti) I'll check with the cruise line like some of you ladies suggested!! Thank you so much!

  • Sorry, I don't know how to add to the previous post.

UPDATE: Just called Princess cruise line and for this specific cruise the age limit is 1 year old. :(

  • My best friend brought her 4 month old girl to Mexico in December. Her girl, Merida, LOVED it! She slept a lot and loved the water. I think it will depend on your baby. Merida cried once, and was an angel the rest of the time. They did a lot of excursions and saw a lot of stuff, altho they had to rest frequently for feedings and dirty diapers. She was in the Maya Sling for 80% of the trip. My friend said she was better behaved in Mexico than she is at home. It depends too on if you want to take care of a baby while you are on the trip, if you have no problem with that, I would go for it!

  • We are planning a 3.5 week trip to Russia and Spain when the twins are 4 months old. I know it isnt a cruise but it's kind of the same idea. I would totally go!

  • I took DS to England and then to Doha, Qatar when he was 2 months and 4 months with DH on a business trips. We took a cruise with DS at 7 months. I would do both again with this baby if given the opportunity. Little ones travel great.
