Go4 - carseat ?

I've been wondering - I have a not-extremely, but slightly puffy coat for DS, and lately, I've been wondering if it is indeed too puffy for the car seat.  It's not very bulky, but does add a bit.  Any way to check, or should I assume it's a bad idea in general?

and sorry to hear K's sick.  :(  I hope she feels better soon.

Re: Go4 - carseat ?

  • the easiest way to tell if it's too bulky is to buckle him into the car seat with the jacket on. Then take him out, and take the jacket off. The buckle him in again. If you need to tighten the straps to get a proper fit, the jacket is too bulky.

You can always put the coat on backwards when he's in the seat or this thread shows another trick: https://car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=29772 although, if using the link version, I would recommend pulling the jacket off the shoulders as well. You'd still be able to zip it most of the way, but it would still allow the harness to be as close to the shoulder as possible.

We use a travel trench from: www.cjsewingroom.com and LOVE it. It's so easy for in the car. There's also the baby bloak (www.thebabybloak.com) or the car seat poncho (www.carseatponcho.com).

I love the travel trench because it's sized (vs the one size BB), so K can still walk in it when not in the car, and we have the turtleneck one so she can wear it in the ergo on my front. I also like that it doesn't have a zipper like the poncho.

  • Hey I have another one that I've been meaning to ask you. Ds is no where near this point yet but when do you get to stop worrying about jacket size? Is it when they're in a belt adjusting booster? Once they're out of any booster/ car seat altogether? We just put him in a jacket for most trips and bring along his big poofy coat for anything that involves more than heading into the grocery store and this works for us. I'm just wondering as a general information thing. Stick out tongue

  • technically never. Even adults should avoid big puffy coats under seat belts. But, once they are out of the harness, it's a little safer.

I actually meant to have ever in there as a choice. Thanks!

  • As go4 said, a coat should technically never be used in the car at all, but I find it much better for a boostered child or adult behind a seatbelt to be wearing one than a harnessed child. For a child in a harness, the straps are not going to tighten in an accident. The coat will compress, and either the loose straps will cause the child to take too much force, or could even cause the child to be ejected from the seat. With a seatbelt, it will just lengthen the amount of time it takes for the seatbelt to lock. It may not seem like a huge deal, but every nanosecond counts in an accident. Still, it's not quite as bad of a risk.
