Organizing baby clothes

The closet in LO's nursery is currently DH's closet.  We truly do not have room in our tiny condo to put his clothes anywhere else.  So, we purchased two dressers to match the crib, hoping it would be enough storage.

So, how are you organizing your drawers?  All the clothes are just so tiny at this point, folding them in piles just doesn't seem easy.  I could roll them, but then it's hard to see what's what.

Re: Organizing baby clothes

  • I've always tried to organize DD's clothes like they have them folded in stores like Baby Gap or Gymboree - kind of folded in half and fanned out in color/size order.  It works best for things like onesies and shirts.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

  • I agree with the PP. I kind of just folded them in half and organized them by sleepers, onsies, sweatshirts, stuff like that so I kind of know what is where.

  • I rolled the onesies and gowns and put them in rows according to size. I folded the sleepers and organized them according to size. In the next drawer I folded the tops and put them together with matching pants according to size. For his nice outfits, sweaters, and coats I hung them in his closet. HTH!
  • you could also try drawer dividers. I found tons of different types on amazon. Or you could look at the Container Store. They've helped to keep our drawers lined up and neat.

  • Have you thought about getting bins for the drawers? It might make it easier to organize the space a bit more. (Socks in a bin, white onesies in a bin, etc).

This. I found cheap organizers at Ikea and they have been very helpful for small things like socks and caps.

  • I had onesies and shirts in one drawer, pants in another, diapers in one, socks in a little basket in one of the drawers, blankets/crib sheets in about 2-3 of the drawers, and the stuff like outfits on hangers were in DS's closet.

When I fold a onesie, I lay it out in front of me, front side down then fold the bottom up about 1/3-1/2 of the way and then fold the top down about the same. (make sense?)  It makes it into a little rectangle.  That way, you can make neat piles of onesies and get an idea of what is on each one.

  • 0-3 and a few 3-6 Dresses, Sweaters, and Outfits are hanging in the closet with DH's stuff.  Larger sizes are hanging in my closet or packed in a rubbermaid until we need to swap sizes.

Here's how the dresser/changer is organized:

    Top Drawer: Cloth Diapers

Middle Drawer: Long Sleeve Onesies, Pants, Short Sleeve Onesies

Bottom Drawer: Sleep Sacks, T-Shirts, Gowns, Sleepers & One Piece Outfits

And then we have these organizers hanging outside the closet for extra storage of burb rags, socks, bibs, shoes, towels, toys, etc.:

  • i do it by size.  each drawer is organized nb, 0-3, 3-6 etc...then keep all the bibs, burp clothes, and socks together in the top drawer.  in each drawer do it in stacks of color and long/short sleeve.  you may want a spot that's easy and quick for pjs.  in the middle of the night if lo has an explosion you don't want to have to search for a change.  maybe even keep it by where lo is going to sleep.  be prepared too... your system may change once lo gets here.  you'll see they mostly wear sleepers in the beginning and go through a lot of clothes because of spit ups and explosive diapers (so fun!).  the baby clothes are SO CUTE but they don't wear them as often as the daily stuff.  make it easy so that dh and any helpers can find clothes easily and have easy access.  good luck!
  • Thanks for all the ideas.  I'm going to check into drawer dividers and bins.

Koala Baby from Babies R Us.  If I remember correctly, they were $16.99 each and also come in blue and sage.
